For sale signs on provincially owned Burnaby land surprises Mayor
BURNABY/CKNW(AM980)

The Mayor of Burnaby is surprised to learn the province has put a for sale sign on some property within his municipality.

Derek Corrigan says the lot is at 6th Street and 18th Avenue on the edge of New Westminister with a sale price he says is below market value.

Corrigan says the province is passing up an opportunity for affordable housing just to drum up dollars to balance the books.

"Most of us are aware that the provincial government is selling off land now to balance their budget. They are leaving what I think is a big problem for the government that follows them in trying to reaquire land to deliver for housing purposes in what has become a very expensive area of the lower mainland to live in."

Corrigan says the city wasn't consulted and neither was area's MLA the NDP's Raj Chouhan.

hmm. The Provincial treasury decided to sell off land that it has no present or future use for, and it's a problem because...there's an election coming.
how much other crown land has been sold off over the years and not so much as a mention.
Go back to your little office in Burnaby Mr Corrigan.
If I own land in Burnaby, do I have to ask you and the council permission to sell it?
If I own land in Burnaby, do I have to ask the MLA?
If you're that concerned about affordable housing, maybe the city of Burnaby should snatch that land up at the bargain basement price it's apparently going for.
I am so sick of non stories being made stories because some dude with an axe to grind or a headline to seek tries to make it a story.

@RichardF_4221 OUR assets are being sold by our asshats. Those properties belong to the people of BC and aren't chattel to make your books look good- kinda like burning your wood house to stay warm. Just an after thought.... the "below market" bargain wouldn't have any chance of ending up in a Liberal supporters hands , would it? Just like, oh let's say a railroad......

If it's so "Prime" and below market value why doesn't the City of Burnaby step up and make an offer ??

@WilliamS_3961 Maybe Mr Corrigan wants to sell some land but doesn't want it going for fair market value...which is what the crown lists land for.

That is what the liberals do ,they sell everything to balance their books. Bc rail made 100 million a year profit and sold that for 1 billion (what a joke ) and now so desperate they run that ad about Dix's 70,000 severance 400 times a day .But forget that Bc rail deal that cost taxpayers 6 million to cover their asses .They will screw this province up knowing the NDP will win and leave them with more problems than the NDP ever left them . You liberal lovers move to that union busting province Alberta.

@Bornhere If a Billion is 1,000 x 1,000,000 (1 million) and the company made 100 million per year just sayin' that's a pretty good deal even if it cost 6 extra million in lawyer fees. Me thinks your bias is showing not your knowledge.

I must remind you, the government has been entrusted by the voters
to be fiscally responsible with the TAXPAYER'S money.

First, their lack of fiscal prudence and accountability created the
need to find the funds to pay off an enormous deficit after unprecedented
construction boom, bringing in billions into their coffers and now, they
are speedily selling off land, at a time, when Real Estate prices have
dropped and it's to save their own hides.!!

Corrigans comments make perfect sense. Why doesn't the province use that land to create affordable housing such as co-ops? Why didn't the province speak to local governments about obtaining crown land in their municipalities?
It is good government policy to consult and respect local governments, but this Liberal/Conservative coalition government in BC doesn't know the meaning of that.....HST anyone :)

What a joke! Garbage in, garbage out! Derek is a true NDP'er just like his MLA wife. He does not realize that the NDP is one united party from province to province across Canada.
He is shooting from the hip just like Ken280, the readers consultant, a man with a briefcase 50 miles away from home, taxed to death, bctaxpayer, and bhappy all do. It is the NDP way!
Derek fails to mention to us why it was okay in Greg Selinger's NDP budget of 2012/2013, in Manitoba to note that dormant, non producing real estate would be put up for sale. His reasons was selling these real estate properties would bring revenue back to the taxpayers of Manitoba, and the funds could be used accordingly for other expenditures.
Derek better realize that maybe his NDP supporters were born yesterday, but not the rest of us.
He better start doing his homework instead of producing propaganda.

This is such a non news item, it should be removed from CKNW's website.
NDP Mayor (I hope he votes for his wife) raises an issue with a well priced chunk of dirt that is such a good bargain that the city of Burnaby wouldn't begin to consider the high market price, but he's got to try and make it an election issue knowing full well that staff made this decision months ago, and no elected official even knew they owned that nondescript corner lot.
Mr Corrigan, you're embarassing your wife, and the leader of her party. Adrian Dix and Christy Clark have both declared "no dirt" campaigns. You just proved that the also rans don't get it. Hope the people of Burnaby remember this when you're up for re-election. Smells of desperation to retain your shweethearts seat in the face of a possibly closer election than most NDPers would otherwise admit. Don't worry though Derek, if you would just shut up and let your better half do the talking, your sweet Kathy may have a chance, so you can still play in the Mayor's chair.

Why does CKNW not mention that the Mayor of Burnaby is an NDP MLA's wife? Sounds like bad editing or news mongering to me.

@RichardF_4221 Sad to say but I do not believe that reporters actually investigate any longer.

Many times a story has been reported that later turns out to be untrue ......

So this is how the corrupt BC Lie BERSLS party balances the books,no surprise to us as they are corrupt to the core.

@bctaxpayer Yep selling a little chunk of mud in Burnaby is going to turn the whole train around on a dime.

I'm sure the staffers that made the decision to sell are thinking they'll save the province by selling something so small and insignificant.

Only issue here is the poor reporting that missed all the important facts, like price, how long it's been on the market, the status of Derek Corrigan and his wife. And the fact that staffers make these decisions not the elected MLAs and their assistants.

I think Mr Corrigan should go back to playing BurgerMeister MeisterBurger In Burnaby and leave the big boy politics to his fully capable and likely embarassed wife.
