No charges against Terrace RCMP officer
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

A Terrace RCMP officer accused of using excessive force against a first nations man last spring will not be prosecuted.

The Criminal Justice branch has determined no charges will be laid against the officer who arrested William Watts on May 15th,  after he called 9-1-1 to report an intoxicated family member was coming to his house.

Lawyers for the crown say there's not enough evidence to back up claims the then-36-year old was repeatedly punched in the head, so a conviction would not be likely.

He also accused police of making racist comments during the arrest.

I don't know what is more disturbing - the alleged behaviour by the cop or the gutless rollover by the Crown Prosecutor.

If the RCMP brass has any desire to improve the image of the force they would act on something like this .

@ChrisM_18 How about the automatic complaints of racism and "brutality" when a drunken, combative native is arrested?

@ChrisM_18 I don't think the crown would just roll over like that if there was a likelihood of conviction. What I think the crown or RCMP should do is release ALL the information (video, witness statements etc) as to why there was no evidence to lay a charge. I think then the public may be satisfied when they see how the "victims" allegations fall apart when tested. But please comment on the issues you probably know nothing about and only have a very few details on. Speaking of gutless - I love the media, just cut and paste press releases - god forbid you ask any questions as to why or what happened. Another fine story by CKNW.

What a terribly surprising outcome. Who would have guessed that they would come to this conclusion?

Make your own decisions - the Crown released an 8 page report as to why no charges were laid. It's funny nothing supporting the police as to why no chrges were brought forward ever made it into the cknw article. Funny that. Anyway here is the link:
