Black says he has investors for refinery project

Energy Minister Rich Coleman says there's still some work to do before newspaper publisher David Black can actually build an oil refinery on the north coast.

But Coleman says it's positive news that Black has apparently found investors for the 25-billion dollar project.

"You need to be able to have the customer and that's what he's been working on with regard to the investor so that piece he'll get done and then he'll have to decide how he wants to proceed with regards to how they would move the oil, cause there is the opportunity to move it both by pipeline and by rail."

Coleman says he's had meeting withBblack and others on this project, and it will still have to go through a full environmental review.

Only if it means lower fuel cost and not spending a penny of our money.

@NewsA All the this product will be for Asian markets. No cost reduction for BC we will end up giving tax breaks along with subsidies just like we do now or more! Go NDP Go

@NewsA Only if it means jobs for British Columbians FIRST!!!
Sounds like it's contingent on the pipeline being built though, still a pretty controversial project in itself.

Black claims it will cut greenhouse gases from the refinery by about 50%.

No refinery has been built in North America for twenty years. This is just a story. No refinery will be built with out public money and tax relief. This refinery is only viable if they can make a profit.

@MichaelD_10 To not build one for BC to lower cost of fuels it deliberately done.To keep prices inflated! There is no money for the oil producers because deflation of gas prices hits profits, how many time did we hear that was the reason gas prices rose from refinery closures or break downs and due to maintenance. There have been 30 refineries shut down since 1970.
In January 2010, Shell closed its Montreal refinery.BC will never get a break, it is called free enterprise markets at play, run by subsidized oil monopolies! Go NDP Go

@MichaelD_10 According to what Mr. Black was saying yesterday on the Simi Sara show there is a 10% profit to be made at the refinery level.

He has been getting more push-back from the big oil producers that would rather refine the product in the Gulf States and allow us to continue to export our jobs along with raw resources.

Since when is it wrong to support a local industry and create new jobs in the process? I can't seem to find out where in our Province's history the decision was made to throw out each and every value adding opportunity we can possible capitalize on.

Black is not the problem but Rich Coleman is, I do not think Coleman would know what a refinery is if was in front of him, why are all the refineries on East Coast, I cannot wait the election, if their is a good idea the Liberals kill it because it was not their idea, what assholes they are!

    Nothing new here!
We used to have a National Energy Policy and the ability to refine our own fuel through a little known (taxpayer owned) company called Petro Canada.
Lets guess what became of it...they sold it off.
Look up the history and see what Govt. brought it in and what Govt. sold it out.
Where's our National Energy Policy now??

@cM_8711 Petro Canada was just personal revenge against Texaco. Texaco took over White Rose in a hostile takeover. As you know White Rose was owned by the Trudeau family. When Petro Canada was put together by the Liberal government of the day, they made sure Texaco Disappeared from the Canadian landscape.

A friend of mine used to be VP of the Ioco Esso Refinery. He told me they closed it because it was only making around a 15% profit which wasn't good enough. No doubt this new refinery would be all about profit margin.

While refined oil is better on tankers it doesn't eliminate environmental risks of oil spills or the risk of the pipeline. Once the pipeline is built how can we guarantee it wont be used to deliver bitumen to tankers?

Northern Gateway, it's more than a pipeline, its a potential disaster.

I agree with the idea of a refinery but not in Kitimat. It does not address the massive safety concerns about shipping through the waterways in that region. Prince Rupert would be a much better location in my opinion.

RICH conman involved than there is something fishy as hell with this deal from the start.

Also gave a liberal answer with the use of the words "apparently found investors?"

"Had a Black & Others?" is there a record of said meeting that lists participants?
