Cuts coming to BC Ferry service
VICTORIA/CKNW (AM980)

The provincial government has wrapped up consultation on upcoming service cuts for BC Ferries.....but the next step is more consultations.

Four thousand people gave input on what and where to cut ferry services last fall.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak says cuts are coming.

"Further discussions with the communities...as we start to plan for whatever reductions there need to be, we know that there will need to be reductions, the ferry commissioner is looking for about 26 million dollars."

And those savings must be realized by 2016.

But Polak says there's little chance any decisions on cuts will be made before the provincial election on May 14th.

Of course not, can't do anything that might upset the voters this close to an election.

Leave the mess for the next guy.

@Fate could make cuts now except consultation with communities is a necessary part of the process.

@joes_2868 Your guess is as good as mine. $10 says it's not Mary Polak.

Why the heck didn't we fight for a bridge, or tunnel, from the mainland to the island, which was discusssed in the 80's & 90's??? The ferry system is archaic nowadays!

@BCBornAndRaised a bridge would not be economically feasible. Due to water depth, weather and other issues. tolls to make such a bridge practical would be more than ferry cost and the bridge would be unusable more often.

I thought David Hahn, the American that was hired because they couldn't find a qualified Canadian with enough bias against unions, fixed everything at BC Ferries before he very quietly disappeared back across the border...

Reducing fares would encourage more people to travel to and from Vancouver Island. That alone would allow for more money to flow into the system through increased usage. It would also be of benefit to the local businesses that rely, at least in some part, on people visiting the region.
I used to travel to the Island every year. The operative term there is "used to". Due to fare costs alone I have decreased my trips to 2 in the last 10 years. It simply isn't worth the additional cost to me.

@True Blue Cutting fares would very likely have to involve cutting services on and off the ships, including possibly scheduled runs. The fuel costs alone on these ships are a little daunting. For example the Coastal Renaissance burns 8,416 litres of fuel per round trip from Nanaimo to Vancouver. Just a small part of the 118 or so Million litres the corporation uses on its ships annually.
