3/4/2013

It's called a 'Five Year Trend Report' and goes back to 2008 looking at stats until 2012.

The report says survey results show 74-per cent of the time transit users feel safe riding the system.

That's up from 64-per cent in 2009.

Crimes against the person were only marginally lower in 2012 compared to 2011 but were about nine-per cent lower than the five-year average.

As well Transit Police are defending their salaries saying they earn roughly two-per cent less than the average Vancouver Police Department officer.

The cost per transit officer including salary, benefits, overtime, equipment and training is 167-thousand-dollars.

Sorry , but there needs to be more thoughtful statistics than this to make me think my money is being well spent , paying the salaries of the transit cops
1 Ask only the people who travel during the non peak hours whether they feel safer - as it's then that your average lowlife criminal is most apt to be active
2 Show me how many criminal activities have been broken up because of the presence or intravention of these transit cops . Show this number as something like " the number of muggings per week has reduced from x to y over the last year"

3 show many criminal arrests have been made over the last year .

4 show me that the number of criminal arrests is declining - as this will prove that the bad guys are going elsewhere to do their business

I do have a difficulty in believing that the Transit Police provide as much value added to the public as compared to a regular municipal or RCMP constable.

The cost of this agency is just way too much for what they do.

I saw Transit Security writing fare evasion tickets on Main Street yesterday on the bus. Last week I saw transit security and transit police working together doing fare checks on the bus.

Recall visiting Vancouver and asking the transit police for some help using the ticket machine to validate our prepurchased tickets only to have 4 of them watch us validate our tickets, then have to stop us to check our tickets. Two seniors, with 4 transit police watching our every move. This must have been very scary for these 4 big men worrying about 2 little seniors!! Mean while loads of people walked right on by. Yup we were impressed, and will be rushing right back to explore Vancouver via transit!! NOT!!
