Part of Kits base taken down
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

2/28/2013

The Kitsilano Coast Guard station is being dismantled.

Last week the federal government followed through on its decision to shut the base down.

Today, trucks rolled in and workers started tearing down the base.

The move saves 700 thousand dollars a year and the feds say proper resources are in place, so safety won't be compromised.

Critics say this decision puts lives at risk.

Premier Christy Clark has declared the "fight isn't over" when it comes to keeping the base alive.

But she later admitted there is little, if anything, she can do about it.

I am not a boater and do not have much experience on the water, thus my question. Do boaters pay any fee or tax on supplies, purchase or fuel that could be contributed to support services such as Coastguard? As a user of roads, railway's, and air pay taxes / fees to support the various infrastructure. Is this an option to fund the Coastguard?

    Sounds like it is.

@Fate I guess they don't want to fight.

As a person that worked on the water for most of my career and a tax payer yes we need this coast guard…………………………….. This is the busiest port in Canada after all

Well that's certainly one way to make sure they don't have to reopen it.

@RichardF_4221 Pretty obvious middle finger salute from the Coast Guard !

There is something not right here. Harper says that the base closed on recommendations from the coast guard.
Are not these the people that work there.
Have some of these coast guard employees going to be given senate seats in the future for making these recommendations.
What would have happened if all the B.C. federal seats were held by the Conservatives just like in Alberta.
Would the base have still closed?
It seems that when voting in an opposition sitting politician, the old story never changes. You suffer.

@joes_2868 The Coast Guard that recommended closure are not the employees. The Coast Guard does not listen to their own people at the best of times. These are higher ups that have no idea what is going on at the water level, except numbers and reports that they can translate into whatever they want them to say.

I am against the base closure, but NW has it wrong...they took part of the dock away, they didn't start "tearing down" the base.

@LeonW They don't make the news, they just invent it.
