Surrey's Mayor says next transit project isn't up to Metro Van mayors

The Mayor of Surrey says despite what the Transportation Minister says it is not the role of mayors to chose the next transit project to go ahead.

Dianne Watts says both skytrain expansion in Surrey and rapid transit along Broadway can both go ahead.

"I am sure the minister well knows that the independent board has that task and it is within legislation for that board to decide it is not in legislation that, that is one of our roles and responsibilities but I am sure she knows that because she is the Minister of Transportation."

While Watts says the two transit expansion projects are not in competition watts says Surrey is farther along in planning the skytrain expansion.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak had asked mayors for more details about funding initiatives and which transit expansion project would come next.

Hmmm ...reads like a bit of political positioning to avoid taking responsibility for the wrong decision (there never can be a right decision) by the Minister !!

Surrey may be farther along in spending our tax dollars but they have not figured out how they are going to pay for this. Time to end the borrow, spend then tax scheme that is public transit. How much are the bankers paying the politicians to get us into hock?

If the NDP promises to make the translink board an elected body they will win by a landslide

@DavidSB And then you will have three branches of govt picking your pockets . . . the Dippers, Translink and the City . . .

Some of these mayors need an "attitude adjustment"; like replacing.

Regarding Ms. Watts; allowing the more 'senior' governments to make decisions for you exhibits a penchant for big government and a way to circumvent democratic processes.

If the sheep won't let the elected elite do what they want; push it up to a bigger government where an individual or 'small' group of individuals don't have as much in the way of control.

Is Ms. Watts a Progressive (one that wants government to run our lives for us - no matter what our wishes) or simply doesn't want to take responsibility with the voters when the incompetent 'TransLink people' raise our taxes and continue on with their mega mismanagement of mega projects. It is clear TransLink is comprised of bureaucrats making decisions with no regard for the taxpayer; they simply want to push ahead with their "champagne taste" projects no matter how it impacts our wallets.

I don't pretend to speak for the people of Surrey, but why don't they start letting their council know what they think of increased taxation in these current economic times? Or, if they don't like the way TransLink is operating, let your council know in uncertain terms. You don't; I guarantee you're going to end up paying through the nose for these mega projects again.

@BCSkulker And here I thought that people wanted people that were elected to their positions to be making the final decisions in regards to transit. People have been complaining for aeons that Translink has too much power and not enough accountability. I welcome the accountability for transit planning and implementation being placed squarely on the shoulders of the Minister. Translink needs to have their taxation teeth pulled and should be an advisory body only.

Hiding in the weeds again Mayor Watts? You do remember that Translink was created by the former NDP government because the mayors in the lower mainland demanded control of what was once "B.C.Transit".Well,now that you have had that responsibility for more than a decade, take a look at the house of cards that you have built with your taxing and spending like drunker sailors.
BC Skulker is exactly right.Local governments are out of control, and almost out of reach. They are in bed with their public sector union buddies. They help them cover up the mess in exchange for being among the highests paid workers in the land. There is rarely any accountability in local government. They ignore their own taxpayers to argue over things like shark fin soup.Issues that should be decided by senior levels of government. These local yokels are just not up to the task. They want the glory if a project works, but hide in the weeds when things go off the rails.
For those who think Mayor Watts is future Premier material.I have to say that I just don't see it.Very personable.Good looking. And a good enough command of the English language to make it SEEM like she knows what she is talking about. But,just like Mayor Moonbean,it's all as phoney as the proverbial $3 bill. These people are in charge because no one with any real brain power wants these jobs. They are the most dangerous to our personal well being and our wallets than any other level of government.Bar none.

@DougB_25 Yes, people, remember when you are voting in a couple of months that the NDP created this mess.
