Coast Guard closure in Kits, but money in Newfoundland

The Harper government shut down the Kitsilano Coast Guard station on Tuesday, but today in Newfoundland, it has announced it's spending $6.6 million on a few buildings for the life boat station in Burin.

That station has been operating since 1973.

While promoting her new budget, the premier continues to speak out about the Kits bases' sudden closure, saying B.C. may be suffering because we are so far away from Ottawa.

"If any Member of Parliament from the government side would like a tour of our coast, I’d be happy to show them, and they can get out there and they can see how many citizens use it."

Christy Clark admits the only thing she can do to get the base re-opened is to try and persuade the feds their decision was wrong.

As well, St. John's Newfoundland will be the new headquarters for the new Atlantic region of the coast guard, which combines the old Maritime and Newfoundland regions.

Problem with the Harper Conservatives is that they have a majority government. They were much more palatable with a minority government.

The best governments Canada have ever had have been minority governments.

@MichaelD_10 I'd like to see a minority government in BC next time around.

Well know we know how Harper and the conservatives feel about BC.

@SusanJ_2218 Ottawa has no interest in BC, other than a tax base. It's time people in the west stopped being so idealistic and took a good look at our place in confederation!

I wonder who will die first, as a result of this foolish closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard base. Will it be a Liberal, a Conservative, a New Democrat? Will it be a tourist? It doesn't matter who it is, or what their political beliefs are. They will have been someone's son, daughter, mother or father, and the person(s) responsible for closing this base should be arrested as soon as it can be proven that this person died, as a result of the closure.

These Conservatives are the scum of the Earth. Our only hope for democracy now lies with the largely unproven Federal NDP. They say all the right things. It's time we gave them a chance to prove themselves as a Federal Government.

The Liberals already proved themselves to be quite corrupt, and were decimated federally. The Conservatives have shown a blatant disregard for democracy, and must also face extinction in "The House" ASAP. 2015 can't come soon enough!

@Borninapirateship If you or many like you think the federal NDP is the answer. This country really is in trouble. The best thing the Quebec NDP could do in my view is allow Quebec to leave Canada. So BC can suseed from this confederation.

It would be the best. Those maniacs we elect will have to convince more people before they enact some wonderful legislation that enriches their friends.

TonyB_0924: Pretty sad state of affairs when you keep shooting from the hip. You must learn to do your research. The "orange glow" pertains to Quebec only in regards to NDP!
