Vancouver's Mayor says the sudden closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Base has left the city's harbour vulnerable.

Gregor Robertson says he was shocked and disappointed with Ottawa's decision.

He says now he has huge concerns for life and safety risks, adding "We have Police and Fire boats that are now basically the default here, don't have the equipment, don't have the training to deal the kind of the work that the Coast Guard is responsible for."

Robertson says now they need to figure out what the backup plan is if something goes wrong.

The Feds announced the base's immediate closure yesterday with no advance warning.

If they wanted to save money, they could have gotten rid of a couple of ex-media senators scamming their expense accounts. Or pretended that there were no qualified Canadians available and staffed it with Chinese temporary workers at $10 per hour with no benefits.

@SlimP_9860 I hear you loud and clear no Con will get my vote, ever! The Liberals/Cons of the coalition were very quite with a please letter to Harpo, a little help and too late.So where are all the Liberal/Cons on this one?Not talking and you blame Dix for not telling you what he would do,you seen in the budget them sealing anything good from the NDP, and you probably will defend this budget as balanced! !Go NDP go

I wonder how much money they are really going to save after the fuel bill for the hovercraft comes in after the summer ? Gas is going up after all!

Very sad, I worked at the base in the 80's. The money "saved" is a pittance when you consider the expense account of some politicians, foreign aid and the likes. I do not think Ottawa cares about our coast and the safety of mariners out here. It definably weighs on me and will influence my vote in the next election.
