Labour leader defends new ads taking aim at "government"

B.C's top labour leader is defending a new ad critical of the federal government's temporary foreign worker program.

BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair says there's nothing wrong with pointing out more attention should have been paid by various levels of government when more than 200 jobs, that could have been done by Canadians, were recently promised to lower-paid miners from China.

"It's not about the provincial election or even a federal election. It's about a complete opposition to a program that brings workers to Canada and exploits them. This is just one more attempt at us to raise these issues in the context of Canadians losing jobs to people brought in with no rights. It's just the wrong formula."

Sinclair says his organization has repeatedly asked for explanations from Ottawa about the failure of the temporary foreign worker program, but ongoing calls for a formal review have gone unanswered.

"I think people appreciate what the labour movement's been doing on this because clearly, the federal government in particular, has failed miserably on this front."

Sinclair says this program should only be used as a desperate last resort, but it is now being exploited by companies looking to save money.

    Back to the 70's Jim . . .
Actually Jim . . . still waiting to see the 200 Qualified Applicants . . . the info released had only about 15.
Time to start paying attention to the Union Members in BC . . . and not financing OWS clowns and other Radicals to get Face Time on TV ! ! !
My bet is the Mine will not happen . . . Jim Won ! ! !

@Dale - left coast A couple weeks ago I asked him where the 200+ applicants were and why only 15 showed up. He said that was an estimate. He was off by 92%!

@Dale - left coast Liberals of the coalition spinners here what they were up to, two unions have obtained the company’s initial application for the mine, which says a traditional room-and-pillar system will be used for a two-year bulk sampling phase, not long-wall mining. So you can bul*sh*t all you want to whom I would love to know? You lie again, they were trying to deliberately denied Canadian workers so what do you have for the defence of HD mining now Mr lefty coast and the liberal budget suck the big one! or is that ok with you also? Balanced Budget liberal mouth piece, eh!Go NDP Go

But, the problem is not really the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The problem is that many companies are taking advantage of it to drive Canadian wages lower as Mr. Sinclair suggests.

    GOOD JOB JIM
when the company fought to not release the resumes of canadian miners that applied, the union stood strong
after they released them by court order , the company said they and the federal goverment would answer in court by feb 15th , but they did nothing but try to say they would try to hire canadians in 2 years.
this is canada we need to have jobs for canadians
good thing the union stood strong or we have all our jobs going to cheap labour.

@fredb_7066 If your typical industrialist in this country could have it 100% his way, there would be people from every nation in the world, clamouring at our shores. Instead of paying 10 bucks an hour, which is starvation, without a life, they would be hiring many for 2 to 4 bucks an hour, and running off with the difference. I have never been to the maritimes, but those poor bu88ers have had the $hitty end of the stick since white men got to Canada. Certainly there would be 200 Newfies or whatever, that could either do the job, or willing to be trained to do it. And the real kick in the crotch is, it's coal, to run the sweat shops in China, which will send their plastic junk back to us, via Walmart. Send them oil, give them natural gas, and watch our livlihoods go down the toilet. How far can greed and egos go?

I have only been in 2 unions in my life, the Operating Engineers, and the IWA(New West). I am by no means a finatic union sort, BUT, Sinclair was absolutely correct. A bloody foreign company, taking our resources should be lucky to get away with only coal, yet they go the extra mile, wanting to shaft our Canadians, and get their own("work for peanuts") citizens into B.C. Japan would toss the entire outfit out on their a$$. Australia may jail them for even thinking about it. Canada, is guilty of prostituting itself, lying spread eagle, for a photo op. Feds are pathetic, and our own little CC blessed it along with the Minister responsible. Maybe on May 15th this year, logic in this province shall prevail, in a manner, provincial politicians have never seen before.
    GO NDP GO!!!!!!!!!!!

      @RegA [deleted] "taking our resources"?
The are "Taking" NOTHING . . . they pay Market Price for the product.
      Out of 300 applications . . . there were NOT 200 underground miners . . . they only told us about 15 . . . .
The Chinese workers were Temporary . . .
Sinclair is "Yesterday's Man" . . . still hanging with the Dipper losers . . . who flushed more Private Sector Union jobs in the 90's than any centre/right govt ever did.
The NDP Depression is coming . . . People Republic of BC . . . will it look like Manitoba by 2015? I say IT WILL ! ! !

Is this mine owned by the chinese? We should get used to these kind of labor tactics, as our federal and provincial leaders are telling china that we are for sale.
