Community minister Bill Bennett has helped resolve a dispute between a number of municipalities, BC Ferries and the BC Assessment Appeal Board.

Bennett says the deal will see make sure ferry terminal properties are accurately assessed, after the appeal board reduced their value to virtually nothing last year and put local governments on the hook for millions of dollars in tax repayments.

"So this agreement that we have between the two agencies not only establishes a methodology a way to get to a reasonable assessment of all these 48 ferry properties, it also includes an agreement that those three years taxes will not have to be paid back by the city of west vancouver, so i would like to suggest to you that it's a win-win."

Bennett says this agreement will run for five years.

This is fantastic news, whatever it means. Now, What is BC Ferries going to do for the poor working schmuck? Answer: Nothing, maybe raise the rates, or come up with an additional fuel surchage, or weed out the old folks mid week break. The possibilities are endless.

So there is a retroactive tax holiday - followed by a requirement for the Ferry terminals to pay taxes based on a realistic property assessment .....sounds like a fare increase is coming to me !!

I agree with the previous posters.Homeowners in North Van will likely win because their property taxes will not go up.But passengers will pay more when rates on BC Ferries have to go up to cover the costs of their higher taxes..This is just an argument about which pocket the we have to take the money from. Not whether we should pay more,or less.
