The BC Liberal Party has announced it is reviewing the candidacy of Surrey-Panorama candidate Sukh Dhaliwal.

In a statement released this morning, the party says he disclosed his tax evasion charges on Wednesday, the same day the story broke in the media.

In an interview with CKNW yesterday, Dhaliwal says he made the mistake of trusting other people to run a company he owns.

Dhaliwal faces six charges after the company failed to file income tax returns from 2004 to 2010.

What a gutless response !! He runs the company - he is responsible !!

This clown has the makings of a great politician

Mr. Dhaliwal is the owner of the company, and the buck stops with him.

As the owner of the company, Mr. Dhaliwal would have had some obligations personally in terms of his company filing an income tax return and so to say that this is somebody else's fault is simply not believable.

Sure sounds like a typical LIEBERAL that slithered out of the cess pool like the rest of them. What's the problem with him running???

Being dumb isn't the best way to get his name in political headlines. We really don't need any more cheaters in government so the Liberal Party doesn't have many options with this guy. Fortunately, he won't be the party leader in a few years.

The problem here is that he failed to disclose this problem when he submitted his name to be a candidate. First of all, he is not being charged wigth "tax evasion". He is being charged with failing to file corporate tax returns for some of his companies. His story is that he has filed returns for some of his companies. It is a common misunderstanding among small business people that all companies must file tax returns each year, even if the corporation is inactive and has conducted no business. So, it is very possible that this is what has happened here. It is sloppy and lazy, and if a tax payer continues to ignore CRA on this they will bring charges.

The use of the term "tax evasion" implies that returns he did file were inaccurate or misleading and there is no evidence of that yet.

My problem with Mr. Dhaliwal is the failure to disclose this prior to his acclamation as a candidate, something he knew about 2 weeks prior to that. He should step aside and another candidate should be found.
