The 17 year old girl could have been spared the trauma of a sexual assault IF THEY HAD KEPT THE CRIMINAL IN PRISON. Just saying!

We can't afford to jail every potential-recidivist deviant indefinitely. There are more such people than most folks understand, and there just isn't enough tax money to jail them all. We successfully manage most of these people in the community, on parole, probation, or otherwise. The USA jails 7 people for each 1 person that Canada jails (per capita), but violent crime rates remain much higher in the USA, as is their government budget deficit! In fact, murder rates are 3 times higher in the USA, despite the threat of the death penalty in many states. We'll always need prisons, but we'll all be safer if we spend more money on social programs than on more prison cells.

@thinkharder Finally someone with insight into the problem! Very likely you are a person who obtained their facts from studies, rather than closed minded "red neck" media types.

@thinkharder So you are telling us if we had put this PODS into a social program he would learn how to be a responsible citizen ?
Can you please share with me some countries in which this progressive thinking is used and the statistics that show criminal activity has reduced ?

Why don't we punish criminals in Canada, instead of petting them on the heads..and letting them out again ?

Social programs are effective for some, but since when do they work for sex offenders? I thought that sex offenders and child molesters were "incurable", so I say "lock them up" until we can treat them.

The reason people are put in prison is to keep the public safe. My heart goes out to the 17 year old victim here. How long will she have to deal with the effects of this attack?

@AldinaI You have to remember that this is not about ONE offender. By inference, you suggest that we have to jail ALL such people indefinitely. We cannot do so, as I've explained. However, early intervention and social justice can work, and saves more potential victims from harm than does spending the money on prisons. By the way, I'm hardly a bleeding heart. I was a police officer for 31 years before retiring. When I was a police officer, while I was working with victims and offenders daily, I studied criminal justice at university. Experience, and the centuries-old study of crime and criminality by professionals all over the earth, lead progressive nations to look beyond prison to solve these problems. I'm sorry if they offend "common sense", but those incarceration/crime rates tell the tale.
