The Royal Canadian Mint will no longer distribute pennies as of today and Vancouver businesses are bracing themselves for some change.

Many say they are happy to see the red coin go, but some retailers worry the transition won't be a smooth one.

"I like the idea of getting rid of the penny just because it's so expensive to make it, it's kind of a pointless coin,” says one store owner.  "For us, I think it's going to be a little bit of a problem, because some people like the exact change."

Retailers will be making adjustments manually, rounding up or down to the nickel.

But Downtown Business Improvement Association Director Charles Gauthier says in the long run people will be thankful for lighter pockets.

CosmicS: What does the B.C. Liberal government have to do with the elimination of the penny?
Royal Canadian Mint belongs to the Federal Government.

HJDH: At least you live in the province of Alberta that has very smart taxpayers. 42 years plus of the Conservative government with only 4 elected NDP MLA's, in the Alberta legislature.

@joes_2868 Just so you know, I helped elect Peter Lougheed and worked for the political machinery there. Alberta voters are raised on conservatism. It has been subtly incorporated into education, and institutions. Hence, voters mostly vote Conservative without thinking. That's the Alberta mentality.

Not so in BC. People here have eclectic backgrounds and are very discriminating, and questioning. It's far more difficult to pull the wool over their eyes.

I know if I was s tore owner, Ide set my prices to always wind up with an 03 04 or 07 08 for the final tab. Every 5 transactions is 10 cents pure profit. Doesnt take an MBA to figure that one out now does it. But not to worry, no Canadian business would behave like that.
