The chief of the Squamish Nation is in mourning after learning his son was involved in Thursday's fatal confrontation with the RCMP in North Burnaby.

Chief Gibby Jacob has released a statement confirming his 45-year old son -- Ryan -- was shot by police at Hhastings and MacDonald shortly after 1 a.m. and died later in hospital.

The Chief says, 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of our son.  This news has sent a shockwave through our family and our community.  He was not only our son, he was a loving father, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin, a sportsmen and an artist.'

The statement ends with him asking for privacy as the family mourns.

Police say they were responding to reports of a man in the neighbourhood with a knife.

The Independent Investigations Office is now in charge of the file.
