Vancouver Police have confirmed the city's first murder of the year was targeted, but they're not convinced it was gang-related.

The victim was a 19 year old man from Vancouver who was attacked at Elgin Street near 47th Avenue last night around 10:30.

He died from injuries caused by a sword, but that weapon has not been recovered.

Police say three of up to five suspects are now in custody.

The victim did not have a criminal record, but he was known to police who say the attack may have been linked to the drug trade, but is not necessarily gang related.

      @speakup huh?
It says gang-related, not that these 5 guys were the entire gang moron.

You know the gang could have 100 members and they thought 5 of them could take care of it right?

Why am I explaining this to you? LOL

the MOST action is always around the sword booth
      Collectors? neato keano
Every home should have at least one shinny sword on the wall!

Maybe that can be the new NDP election slogan?

The author seems to be trying to distance this story from gang involvement. It does not matter that this was or was not a gang incident. It is a murder caused once again by CANNABIS PROHIBITION.

Cannabis prohibition is evil. It causes a lot more problems than it solves.
It also puts a ton of money in gangs and bad mans hands.
We are loosing the drug war and spending money we can't afford. Interdiction ruins more lives than it helps.

I was in a logging camp a few years ago where a new employ smelled marijuana in the bunk house. He reported it to a boss. The boss said I can make them stop smoking, but if I do then they will drink. With the possibility of rolled trucks or a tug aground on the beach, or hurting themselves hung over the next morning.
The worst thing that happens because of marijuana smoking is the pastry tray in the bunk house gets raided.

Once again prohibition fails us all.

Look at the Swiss. who had problems like us but got rid of them fast through harm reduction. Why is the Harper Govt. going backwards and lets call out their supporters for wanting to go backwards

@BieberStoner69 Harper is set on going the way of the USA. He has passed his 6 plant law. Next on his agenda is to get the help from the provinces and build 5 new prisons which he or the next government will sell to the private sector, because of course the public sector can't run them efficiently.
After he takes the sentencing part away from judges. Because he doesn't trust them to keep his prisons full.
After that, the guys who pay for election campaigns will have steady income from their prisons for ever. Once the public figures out they can't afford to keep all these folks in jail, The prisoners will become cheap labor.
