BC's first Auditor General for Local Government has now set up office in Surrey.

Basia Ruta will carry out performance audits of local government operations and will provide recommendations on economy, efficiency, and effectivness.

Ruta's only been on the job three days and says her first order of business will be to meet with local governments in coming weeks.

"Our focus in this office is on value for money on performance audits, is the operation approach we're looking at, has that been managed with due regard to efficiency, economy, and effectiveness?"

The office was first suggested by BC business groups to provide an extra level of accountability and transparency for taxpayers.

First stop, Prince George, where the local government wont give councilors details on contract expenditures without an order in council to force them too. Of course it wont make it through council though because the contractors are heavy ($$$$) supporters of the mayor and she'll make sure the request dies.

@Fate heck...try most municipalities!!! Taxes go up, predictably at 2...3x the rate of infaltion..while property values go up? Hummmm...duh?
THREE trucks go down my street weekly to collect garbage,,,"general", "wet", "dry" and sometimes a 4th...for yard waste. Saving?...or wasting...all in the cause of the environment. But my taxes MUST go up to pay for the same, but LESS environmental service.
HAH! Bite me, i pay my taxes, but pay $8.00 every 2 months to take our garbage to the dump...all seperated with less hassle than what happens at the curb.
YAH! Have her look into the absolute waste of taxpayer money!!

Then watch CUPE go to work (not it's members...just the union)...and raise hell.

Ah yes, setting up the office in Surrey. With state of the art equipment, expensive logo no doubt, mission statement, recruiting of highly paid staff, and on it goes. Another empire for civil servants founded on the false promise of efficiency and effectiveness, when the real job is to make sure not one civil servant ever walks the plank for incompetence. They look after their own.

Ok lets get on with auditing the City of Vancouver first, city manager, city transportation, the mayor and dysfunctional Vision Vancouver council, next Burnaby, next Surrey and then Richmond for starters.

The concept of a municipal auditor is a good one. Unfortunately the powers provided to this office are too weak to stem the tide of municipal spending and over taxation.

They should give her a 10% commission of all the waste she exposes. She'll make a fortune and we'll save one
