Updated: Slater cuts ties with BC Liberals
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

1/14/2013

John Slater has walked away from the BC Liberals, to sit as an independent in the riding of Boundary Similkameen.

He made the announcement with this tweet.

"Eff. Today, I will be stepping down as a member of the BC Liberal Caucus and will sit as an Independent for the rest of the session"

The BC Liberals responded by email with party president Sharon White being quoted.

"John Slater has made significant contributions to his community in both private and public life."

"Last month, John informed colleagues that he would not seek re-election. Over the past week, he has reconsidered his decision and sought to be nominated as the BC Liberal candidate."

"Mr. Slater's candidacy is not being approved due to personal issues that, in our view, impact his ability to represent the Party."

"The Party sought a cooperative solution through discussions with John. This is not a decision taken lightly and is fully considered."

Slater is shaking his head at the statement that he has personal issues and is unfit to represent the party.

"I don't know, they are grasping at straws, I mean, you know I have got some health issues but unfit is....what is that word?...I am out of shape? you know what I mean?"

Slater says fellow MLA's have been calling him today after the party said his personal problems made him unfit to run.

"Yup I have had a few phone calls from them you know they are a little bit taken a back but you got to remember to there are what is it 17 or 18 current sitting MLA's on our party alone that are stepping down too, right."

Slater says the party may have put the riding at risk of being lost to them in the next election.

"Yeah I think so there is going to be a lot of disappointed people no question."

Slater has not decided yet if he will run again now that he is an independent.

The BC Liberal Boundary Similkameen riding association president Zach Poturica says the party hadn't talking to them for months and is treating Slater unfairly.

"Here we are and unfortunately it has taken, well, from mid-September till now and we got the phone call five minutes before we went to the media with the announcement that we are making today that you know they are coming out with this press release and that it is our fault for putting them into this position that is what we were told today."

Poturica says he too is resigning in protest as are several other members of the executive.

"Without John there as our candidate they just kind of feel betrayed by the party that they have been mislead all along, which is true you know we have been told it is going to happen it is going to happen and then you know the final hour comes and you know they are trying to do everything they can to try and spin this in their favour. We just don't have the energy to continue that battle with them anymore."

Oliver councillor, and former mayor, Linda Larson has expressed interest in running for the Liberals in the riding.

you must be sxhausted at the end of the day - taking on all the Right wing idiots who have the temerity to express their opinion on this site !

@ChrisM_18 He replaces his keyboard on a daily basis, but that's good for our economy since he is constantly purchasing one.

We all have our opinions, views and beliefs, and it's very comical when one decides to call you wrong, a Liberal or Con insider, a Liberal payroll, and so on.

As for Mr. Slater, this entire story is missing details from either side. He decides not to seek re-election, then decides he does, then he's not longer endorsed. Something happened within the party itself that is not being shared.

@ChrisM_18 I think the BC Liberals think they've got a better candidate lined up (someone without BC Liberal baggage). Then they fed Mr. Slater to the wolves before he could bad mouth them for not letting him back in. Now (they figure) he just looks bitter if he slags this bunch of back stabbers.

ChrisM_18 and Commonsense: Ken280 is a sick man when it comes to this website. It is his hobby, and people like me just have to keep pounding on him to eventually make him do his research before barking.
Ken has not given one piece of research material yet to the readers. He thinks that everyone has to be in agreement with him. Well he now knows that is not the case and is at odds with Adrian Dix. Adrian Dix says that the next election will be a nail biter and Ken says we are going to have a NDP government.
Unbelievable for a man that tells us that he talks to Adrian Dix.

@joes_2868 According to the Globe and Mail, Slater was told that the polls indicated that he was unelectable as a Liberal candidate.

But, if they did polling in another riding, the polls will also suggest that the nominated Liberal candidate is unelectable. This may be more more the case than not...in the grand scheme of things...and apply to many ridings.

Is there something new here? Not likely.

@joes_2868 Hahaha are you kidding you think this is all about research and what the NDP did in 1973 you do think you are pounding me with those Thumper the grouse wings you can thump and pound Chris and speak up, along with maybe you can throw Jas j in there but I doubt if even you will have him! Thumper Joe if you think that I read your rants when it is copy and paste and not original at all. Thumper you are a Joke. To think, I am the one that want people to agree with me, if that was the case I would not be here! I came here because I was curious about this CKNW and all of the spin it will hold and I was so right, even more spin among yourselves. At the time just a few people that were not of the coalition were here and boy did you guys hammer freely and deliberately to demean, defame, belittle and humiliate, relentlessly most of you could not fight your way out of a paper bag,the sure signs here of plain old bullies! You people are not out to make points or persuade anyone just the right wing idea of fun as we have seen in the last 12yrs of pain and suffering by the people who are not so well off! To think you want people to vote for a party full of Individuals just like yourselves,God help us! Go NDP Go

Ken280: Are you sleeping okay? Note that bhappy is missing my comments, a friend of yours.
How come nobody misses your B.S.?
You are the big joke, Ken!. My articles are taken from the true originals but I put them in writing so people like you can burn burn burn while reading them because if I just give the info of where to find it yourself, you will not look it up because the truth hurts.

Once again, have you and Adrian had a misunderstanding? In Adrian's year end interviews with the B.C. media, Adrian says that the election will be a nail biter.

The readers consultant, our man with a briefcase 50 miles away from home with a water pill prescription inside for high blood pressure says B.C. will have a NDP government.

Please explain the differences to the readers.

You are so right wing you thump in a circle the left arm does not work for you, Thumper Joe but you have a few followers here that will help you out to set you in the right position!

Ken280: You said you came here because you were curious, well you can leave anytime you want to.
Until you start doing research before barking, no one cares what you think, and if your garbage persists, then people like me just have to keep pounding sense into you.
I believe you could be a good person Ken, but when the hip pocket is the most important factor in life and not health and family, then you have major major problems.
On May 14, 2013, at around 8:45 pm, we will have our answer.

I was at VYR last fall when this guy was refused onto an Air Canada Jazz flight because he was drunk. Surprised it took this long to get out as lots were there at the time.

John you made the right choice leaving the corrupt BC lie berals. This way you will still have a job after May.Risky Clark as you know is done and won't even win in her own riding.

Ken280: Are you and Adrian Dix not seeing eye to eye anymore? Did he not pay for your coffee last time when the two of you talked. We know he does not pay transit fares.
Adrian Dix says that the election will be a nail biter and you say that B.C. will have a NDP government.
Please explain this to the readers.

Nothing personal Ken, but does your wife read your commentaries? Does she give you feedback too of why you are not doing any research before barking and shooting from the hip?

Ken you are not a millionaire. Kevin O'Leary is. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, before commentaries.

    Do you understand English?
