The City of Vancouver says hundreds have been turned away from temporary winter shelters since December.

In a release, Mayor Gregor Robertson says the solution is more shelter space and more housing.

That issue of affordable housing is echoed by Irene Jaakson, co-ordinator of the Vancouver Extreme Weather Response Program.

"The only thing that's going to deal with the fact that we have people living on the streets is access to safe, affordable housing."

According to the City, an average of 24 homeless people have been turned away each night since the beginning of December due to lack of room.

Another thoughtful and insightful comment from everyones favorite Mayor !!

That's it Gregor - throw lots of our money at the symptom ! Don't worry your pretty little head about addressing the underlying problem !!

perhaps a survey could be done to find out where all these homeless come from..ie out of city or out of province.

@BOBF_5970 For the most part the weather in Vancouver is quite mild. Probably a lot of people migrate to Vancouver because of the climate. I am totally against providing for all these people all the time. That is enabling them to carry on that lifestyle. Why are Mexicans coming here to work on the farms. Why are there thousands lined up at food banks. Are we a third world country? Most industrialized countries don't have food banks.
The Gov't needs to look after those who can't look after themselves and the rest need to get a job. Maybe two jobs. Whatever it takes. We bring in foreign workers to work in fast food outlets. Something wrong with that picture.
We really need to stop enabling.

Whatever you feed will grow. If you keep putting up housing then eventually people from across the land will come to Vancouver for the free shelter. time to work on getting these people's lives back on track

@DavidSB Exactly + but that would take some focused thinking and perhaps some hard decisions - which is well beyond Visionless Vancouver - so they just throw more of our money at the symptom.

Simple. Customize five or ten 40 foot trailers into heated mobile sleeping units. They could have a small tv room with micro wave coffee/tea hot soup. Sleeping rooms could be semi private with 2-4 bunks. A small his end her bathroom would fit as well and it could sleep10-14, free parking for your shopping cart. Tow them where you want store the units in the summer when not required

@shanh_7890 You really do not even have a clue who is homeless! Try your scheme it will be a disaster the majority of these people need a hospital! If the bedbugs and disease did not spread packing people like sardines is not the answer. On the other hand these containers can make nice comfortable homes with the right plans. The trailers would be thrashed.
