A Vancouver police officer, who's been commended for catching hundreds of impaired drivers, says it's a labour of love... because he's seen enough death and destruction to last a lifetime.

Most police officers stop fewer than 20 drunk drivers a year, but over the past two years, constable Brant Arnold-Smith has pulled more than 500 off the road.

"My uncle was also killed by an impaired driver. He was 32 years old up in Terrace, B.C., so I personally have been touched by the crime. I'm in a position where I can make a difference to prevent the loss of life on B.C. roads."

National numbers show about three thousand more drunk drivers were caught in 2011 compared to 2010, but over the past five years, the Lower Mainland's recorded a 40 per cent reduction in alcohol-related fatalities.

what an awesome story, congratulations on a fantastic job and service you are doing for the community, and how sickening to think there are that many morons who get behind the wheel whilst impaired and drive, keep getting them!!

This is an awesome story, and good to hear the reduction in alcohol fatalities sits at 40%. Reason being is impaired drivers has risen by 60%, yet for some reason no one will talk about this as they have not been trained to detect those who have taken drugs. Only the States are ahead of these things.......as usual. We are only about 20 years behind now!!!!!

As much as I detest drunk drivers, I always thought the policeman's job was to uphold The law, not uphold a law. Its nice that he can be free to carry out his personal vendetta against drunk drivers unopposed

@UnemployedinBC Ah but for the short cut investigative methods courtesy of the province.

I have not read if the breath test devices have gained any credibility since so many failed not that many months ago.

These short cuts regardless of their best of intentions are just that and can lead to roadside justice of law enforcement.

The police have this little club that if they get so many administrative impaired drivers they get special recognition.

I have a tough time with such short cuts when they eliminate a judge and your day in court.
