An "extreme weather alert" has been issued for Vancouver's homeless.

"Conditions are sub zero and they really pose a real health and safety risk and we want people who are living outside to come in to the designated shelter sites."

Irene Jaakson, coordinator of the city's extreme weather response program, says the alert is in place for the next three nights.
She adds it opens up additional space in shelters.

"Across all of our sites, we're looking at about 200 extra mats.  But I really need to stress that we have not turned anybody away, I'm certainly cautiously optimistic that we're not going to have to turn anybody away."

The forecast calls for a low of minus three tonight.

      @speakup Lol... that's true.

      When you are in extreme poverty is very hard to bring yourself out of it because you can't reach the help available, no matter how plentiful.

    As an experi,ment on two cities in the US - they built apartment buildings - simple structures with basic needs - So the result is that it costs the cities approximately $10,000 a person a year instead of the million it now costs;

    The reason for the million dollar costs is because homeless are picked up at various locations by different people - taken to hospitals etc.... but if each person had a decent room in a building it works better financially and I would assume better for the homeless person . They also found that some people actually improved themselves and got jobs

    I know that this is not the case with the mentally ill

      @AnneH_4 $10,000 a person a year instead of the million it now costs?What the hell are yapping about? $1millon a person don't say this to loud some Cowboys out there will do a cull! They will warehouse people all you want, then With this comes the pests like mice,rats along with cockroaches and bedbugs that have reached a crises in the lower main land.The pests and disease in dorm housing, once started will spread to all of us.They have to put the mental people in the proper hospitals but do not think that all homeless are sick! some have fall down on their luck or are getting old and just thrown away!
