UPDATED: Waldorf hotel to close
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

1/9/2013

East Vancouver's Waldorf Hotel is closing down.

The Waldorf has been sold to a real estate company that plans to put up condos.

The hotel was built back in 1947, and after some pretty run-down years, made a comeback in 2010 with a new look and attitude.

The hotel will be closed as of January 20th.

Mayor Gregor Robertson has issued the following statement on the Waldorf:

"The Waldorf closing is a big loss to Vancouver’s growing creative community. They built a great culture hub, and it’s my hope that they’ll be able to re-launch and return in some form in the near future. Supporting Vancouver’s dynamic arts and culture sector is a top priority of our City Council, and the City is exploring ways to support the Waldorf continuing as one of Vancouver’s most unique and vibrant cultural spaces."

Additional background from the Mayor’s Office:

The site at 1489 East Hastings is currently zoned for mixed-use commercial purposes, not residential development.
Any change in zoning would require extensive neighbourhood consultation and approval by City Council.

@lg_3045 I agree. Seems a shame that this group invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to spruce up the building only to have a developer buy it to make more condos. I hope they don't tear down the building. Vancouver has enough glass condos. The city is becoming so homogeneous in its housing. They don't preserve the old buildings like other cities do.

Do you remember that feeling, when the Commodore closed down and you thought there was no hope. Then it reopened and there was a huge collective sigh of relief from many generations of people. I have the same feeling now with the Waldorf. Except I have a bad sense we won't have the same outcome. Solterra will let it sit, it will rot away or leak, people will forget, it will be condemned from neglect and torn down. We have so few cultural treasures left that span many generations and are still in use. I have no problem with the developer building around this space but keep the Waldorf INTACT. At least for the sake of saving a tiny piece of Vancouver history.

@ChrisW_18 Chrisw? You worked FX I did also I was a painter on set for the movies but I was in Toronto Temporarily thank God! I remember in my youth working out of the long shore union hall! I had some good time at the wall! These people buy and tear it down to make room for parking! I hope these people stay and let it roar until the end they might keep themselves above board The partners now in the waldorf getting turfed have their apartment invested in the project with renos in 2010!
