Another step toward return of PST
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

The BC government has taken another step in the long process of switching back to the old Provincial Sales Tax.

Love it or hate it, the 12 per-cent Harmonized Sales Tax will be officially replaced by the old provincial sales tax and G-S-T on April first at a total of...12 per-cent.

The Liberals have long said the P-S-T will be restored with all of its previous exemptions.

Today the government released a draft version of legislation that will need to be passed in the next couple of months to make that happen.

The NDP says the government had promised that bill by the fall, but the lack of a fall sitting of the legislature made that impossible.

Meantime the government says it's providing a wide range of tools including online registration to make the switch-back easier for businesses.

they are already lying about the tax! the tax on private vehiclesales is staying at 12% instead of going back to 5% GST only. How many times do you need to pay tax on a vehicle? is 12% on a new one not enough already?

@brianp1950 You're right. The 7% tax on the re-sale of used vehicles is probably not the only difference. This makes me wonder how much the "new car" industry paid in lobbying to get this imposed on the people of B.C. Only sellers that are deemed to be "curbers" should be subject to this tax.

@brianp1950 Now please don't assume I am for the Lieberals when I say my comment - I am not, but technically they are not lying about this specific item. The 12% tax on private used vehicle sales was a new tax (not HST) that they passed at the same time or just after the HST, so it is not necessarily affected. And to answer your question on "how many times do you have to pay the ax on the new vehicle " the answer is " once, if you trade your old one in" that is because if the purchaser of a new vehicle trades in their old one they only pay tax on the difference between the two...so the person buying the old one pays the rest of the tax. This helps the used car buyer (buying from a dealer) too because you know who you're buying from and you get certain guarantees (title, worthiness of goods, payment).. Which are all at risk in private transactions.

I'm still convinced that these stall tactics (like cancelling the fall sitting) are a deliberate attempt to make the transition back to the PST/GST as painful and awkward as possible for the incoming government because the BC Liberals know they are going to be destroyed in the next election (no matter who wins). It took just over 12 months to bring in the HST. Ineptness is the only other excuse for it to take 18 months to return to the PST/GST.

At least in B.C., only GST will charged on restaurant and pub food and beverages purchases whereas in NDP Manitoba, they made restaurant and pub food and beverage purchases be taxed under their PST regulations. They also add pst to haircuts and manicures.
The NDP government in Manitoba say they don't need HST. They just keep adding more and more to the PST.
Surprise, Surprise, if you give Adrian Dix the chequebook!

@joes_2868 Joe who said he will do like in Manitoba!Thumper the grouse in heat, back from Mexico ?I think the grouse fright wig squeezed your brains some! He comes and holding his crystal balls in each hand and sticks his finger in a light socket and really scares the hell out of people to think he might be in charge of BC finances! Go NDP Go!

Kevin Falconnuts, said he will take all the time he wants to bring back the old Tax! I do remember Dix said he wanted total Tax reform in BC. With consultation with business and the people of BC.I think he knows what will go with the public and not like the arrogant Liberals! Now I know the spinners with their crystal balls in their hands will have some negatives to add. To them even if the NDP do well will not be good enough! The status quo is the only way for the right wing retired lot with nothing to do but comment here and holiday in the USA and Mexico .ext.Go NDP Go!

Ken280: Boy are we in a bad mood or what? I did not go to Mexico. I took my wife, three adult married children and their families on a vacation which I paid the total shot for. I believe in enjoying life with family while you are alive and not the hip pocket like some we know.
Ken, the NDP are united from one end of the country to the other. A provincial membership also puts you as a member of the federal party.
Adrian will only follow suit to what Greg Sellinger and Darrell Dexter do.
Why don't you ask Adrian Dix next time you have coffee with him as you said that you talk to him.
Take your water pill if you feel bloated!

@joes_2868 How was the holiday, Joe? I, too, took off during the Christmas break. Enjoyed some good family time, relaxed and took in the snow. Not a bad break.

@bluethunder Hey bluethunger. You are so right about haircuts. . Sure hope kevie "HAIRBOY " falcon goes out and gets a store bought haircut after the PST finally gets back. Sure can't see at his well over payed salary why he couldn't afford it before. If you don't think he was over payed just look at the health care and highways he was pretending that he knew something about. One three billion dollar bridge comes to mind. But hey kevie, i'm sure your parents are proud of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

brianp1950: No, B.C. Liberals are a coalition, in otherwords another name for Social Credit. These MLA's either vote Conservative or Liberal in federal elections. Dalton McGuinty is a provincial arm of the federal liberals. His MLA's only vote Liberal in federal elections.
Same goes in Saskatchewan as in B.C. The Saskatchewan party MLA's either vote Conservative or Liberal in federal elections.
