A young man with a history of drug abuse and violence has been sentenced to jail time for attacking a bus driver in Surrey last February.

Steven Fayant pleaded guilty last year in the choking of Ram Punni as well as the stabbing of another man on a different day in Aldergrove.

The crown asked for a sentence of three years, but the judge agreed to factor in time served, reducing the global 33 month sentence down to 22 months.

The 20 year old crack addict has several probation conditions to meet including mandatory rehab.

Speaking outside the courthouse in Surrey, Gavin Davies with the bus driver's union says the victim was pleased some jail time has been ordered.

Punni declined requests to comment.

Wow, 22 months for assaulting a bus driver... but if had driven drunk and killed the driver, he would have received a whopping 37 month sentence.

At least this guy received a sentence unlike the punks who got a slap on the wrist after being underage, drunk and pummeling a bus driver. Oh, but the one underage punk was told by the judge not to drink and then ride the bus again. Severe punishments for sure!

Glad to see jail time for this crime--and the "mandatory rehab". Hope he's clean by the time he's out again.

ok, as great as this is, does the punishment fit the crime.....Kayla Bourque, who had planned on killing a college roomate, has basically been deemed a serial killer waiting to strike, in possession of child pornography, viciously murdered and filmed and enjoyed killing animals, and is a high risk to reoffend, with the most probationary conditions the judge said he has ever seen serves SEVEN months?! wtf is wrong with this picture. I am not in any way trying to diminish what happened to this driver, it was wrong and horrible and I think our transit drivers should follow suit of London bus drivers who are protected behind a shield but seriously, a would be murderer is out after 7 f*&ing months, its not right
