VPD tallies drunk driver stats
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

Vancouver Police have tallied up how many suspected drunk drivers were caught during road checks between Friday night and New Year's eve.

They pulled 68 people off the roads.

Nearly half were stopped on December 28th and only 17 were caught on the final night of 2012.

The VPD can't release any comparison numbers from last year because that's when the validity of new roadside prohibition rules were challenged in court.

That's still 68 too many. And that's only the ones that were caught. It begs the question how many impaired drivers were out there. I think the message is slowly getting through, but there will always be those who think they won't get caught, and they will continue to drive impaired until they do. Roulette at it's best.

I wonder if they used the defective ones again!

In Mission one gets a 24 Hour Suspension for driving to slow as reported here last week without any field sobriety tests conducted.

In any event I am all for the Criminal Code of Canada standards of .08 but not the revenue cash cow that the provinces are trying to create.

To be clean they need to stop with the availability of alcohol and the cash they garner from its sale in the first place.

How do those numbers compare to last year?

I prefer partying where you are staying. Why risk the drive or the travel home? Get a hotel, stay there and so on.
