A 23-year-old man is spending the first day of 2013 in jail after stealing a few cases of red bull from a Burnaby gas station.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Steve Crawford says the man kicked out windows at the Chevron on Canada Way just after 11 on New Year’s Eve, claiming he had a gun.

"Integrated lower mainland police dog service attended along with Burnaby RCMP members.  They did a fairly short track, and located the suspect."

Crawford says the man has a history with police, and is known to be armed and dangerous.

He will remain in custody pending charges.

I wonder, If the thief had have run from the police and the dog was sent to apprehend him, would the BCCLA and certain media outlets be up in arms? After all it was only a break and enter to steal energy drinks.

Interesting how some people want police dog services to attend quickly, know what the motive for the particular crime is and then know the age of the criminal before utilizing the dog when the criminal flees from or fights with the police.

Maybe when the police catch up to the criminal and are running behind them they can ask while they are running, "What was the motive for your crime? How much did you get away with? What the the approximate value of the property you damaged or stole? What is your age?"

@MicahC ...and let's not forget "Did you have a disfunctional childhood? Do you have a mental illness? Are you Aboriginal? Are you from East Van? Is anyone in your family a Kardashian? Do you have David Eby's card in your pocket?"....

@both of you....one day you may be misidentified (or correctly identified...) as a 'criminal' and dogs may be on your tail. I bet you'd like time to stop and have someone come up to you with like...a billion questions.

@Sean A Ya, except if a police officer yelled at me to stop, I'd stop. A dog would never be on my tail because I wouldn't be running from a crime scene.
