Vancouver bistro owner urges council to ease cost of doing business

Vancouver council is being urged to lower the cost of a business license.

Remi Caudron runs Salmon N' Bannock Bistro on Broadway and says the cost of a business license has more than doubled for him in the last couple of years going from just over four hundred dollars to over nine hundred.

He says enough is enough and he wants council to do something about it before small business owners like him have to close up shop.

"People on the street that live and shop and hire locally need to be surveyed and included in the decision making."

He also says the cost of rent in Vancouver is getting out of reach for most.

"We sign up to move and grow and get bigger but the rent there is twenty-seven-thousand dollars and it's just insane."

Caudron's written a letter to council but so far hasn't heard anything.

Huge costs are what changed Robson Street from what as an exciting place with boutiques and shops with unique items to a Street full of boring chain stores

City council did not listen back then so dont hold your breath now

@tedw_5037 It's a combination of ridiculously high taxes and greedy landlords - The extreme greed in today's society will eventually be its downfall in some form or another

I wonder who owns the property? Maybe absentee landlords?

It would be helpful if the Provincial Government would STOP downloading to the MUNICIPALITIES and creating this problem. We ALL want to support Local Business!! And keep our money at Home!

The prices in Vancouver must be horrendous. I wouldn't know since they hate my car so much that they have convinced me to stay out of the area.

So, your taxes have gone up and your customers are driven out of the area. This does not sound like a formula for success to me.

@DavidSB agreed, cannot afford the charges to go downtown, gas tax, traffic, no parking, and now bridge tolls, all I gotta say is good luck it is only going to get worse. Maybe you should start charging annual fees on bicycles as they seem to get a free pass on everything, no insurance required, no gas tax paid, no worries about parking and no tolls and they have their own lanes, pretty good deal compared to everyone else paying their share.

I can't believe the number of retail locations in Vancouver that have "For Lease" signs in the window. Furthermore, it is truly sad that so many businesses that have been around for a long time (>10 years) are starting to close. From some of the articles I have read in the Vancouver Courier, it appears that rising property taxes (which are rising at an astronomical pace year over year for residents as well) are the primary cause with a changing demographic affecting demand for specialty items. It's a little scary to think about what our future is going to look like here in Vancouver. Governments at all levels really need to rein in the spending as the well is going to run dry very soon.

Try running a service business. Every municipality wants a business license. I run a 1 man show that would pay over 9000- yes 9000 bux to be legally operating in all the areas I service.
