Frustrated Boxing Day shoppers calling 911 over extra traffic, police say
BURNABY/CKNW (AM980)

The RCMP in Burnaby say they are taking 911 calls about the busy traffic on Boxing Day.

So they want to remind holiday shoppers to not call the emergency line and just be patient while waiting to get in or out of parking lots.

"It’s a bit of an ongoing issue at times. We recognize that 911 is an easy number to remember, convenient to call the police, but it is reserved for emergency calls only and we ask people to try to respect that as much as possible."

Burnaby Staff Sgt. Steve Crawford says police are working in various cities to help control the extra volume, but calling 911 is not appropriate to dial in this case.

Seriously? What speaks worse of people ...frivolously calling 911 about traffic or wasting times hopping today?

Shouldn't this person be charged with mischief, given a ticket/fine or something. People like this need some sort of deterrent from doing this again.
    Dorkus.

If your living in Vancouver put the total blame on Gregor Robertson and his dysfunctional Vision Vancouver Council they have not built new roads in the last 50 years, if you cannot get around use the bike lanes they are never used.

@KenL_6250 Are you really for real? Another stupid comment on behalf of NPA and the Liberals. What the hell does vision council have to do with metro town?Same old BS from the fans of the cracker jack box.

Unfortunately there is no law that I have been able to find which prohibits people from calling 911 for non emergency reasons.

Alberta and Saskatchewan both have provincial laws against the misuse of 911. I would venture to say that most 911 calls (at least where I live) are not emergencies.

Boy do we need to a reminder of what a real emergency is! Traffic jams is not one. Some folks are quite stupid.

That's what happens when you pretend really hard that everyone will ride a bike or take transit.

I would like to know what the gender breakdown is. There must be some way to identify people who abuse the 911 system with idiotic calls

This is all so stupid from the sheepeople that called 911 to the way the police said please don't call 911 when they should have been arresting these folks for stupidity if nothing else. To some poster who tried to blame it on the mayors office because of bike lanes.
I have very may doubts about the survival of our species. We will never get off this planet alive.

Well! Folks of the well heeled just wait until we have a real emergency in the lower main land,The fight over bottled water at all supermarkets over a boil water advisory was enough to shed a light on what it will be like! I think the survival of the fittest will come into play, we have been taught so well in the last 20 yrs to be No.1! The really rude awakening with be who will survive? will it be the ones on the top now or the ones who are learning and have learn to live with nothing but handouts and a foot in the face everyday! Time will tell who was nice or not you build it and they will come like it or not! the blame is ours, be warned treat people like crap and it will come back to bite you in the butt!
