Transit fares will climb January first

Fares for buses, Skytrain, and West Coast Express are going up as of January first next year.

Translink's Derek Zabel says they expect to raise 32-million dollars with the fare hikes.

"We are going up two-percent per year and this is something that was set by the Commissioner that we are allowed to raise Transit fares by two-percent per year so we are going back to 2008 so you are looking at an overall raise of about ten-percent on your fares."

However, Zabel says monthly passes aren't regulated by legislation so they will increase by twelve percent,  not ten.

He says monthly pass holders will still get value "relative to the short term fare increases."

West Coast Express Fares are going up twelve and a half percent for passengers with 28 day passes.

Retroactive to 2008 they say! It is almost at the point where transportation by way of Translink services are not economically viable. Back to using my car.

Why can't Translink find savings like a reduction to their bloated staff salaries and benefits. The Translink Board of Directors should all be fired!

@StephenG_3 Stephen you hit the nail on the head! Bloated salaries and benefits. And don't forget the pay those board members receive. A total waste of money.
But is anyone listening to us?? Very frustrating.

Unbelievable , they will have to really crack down on fare evasion now.

When the leader of the NDP thinks it's ok to be caught riding sky-train with no ticket you know fare evasion is culturally acceptable. This fare increases won't raise more money they will raise less money

Gee, thank god they came up with that plan, I was starting to worry that the Translink mis-managers wouldn't be able to find the money for their raises and bonuses...

Hopefully people can detect the sarcasm in my post.

How on earth do they expect to run a public transportation system that has almost reached a point where it is NOT economically feasible to use it? And to add fuel to the fire, it will only get worse in terms of personal cost to use it.

Something drastic needs to change.....it's absurd management

@taxed to death I heard you guys use fuel taxes on health care instead of transit. Why is that?

Why not tax fatty and sugar foods to pay for health care and use fuel tax on transit?

Tax FAT and SUGAR for health care and use GAS taxes on transit and roads. Why subsidise heath care?

If you can write off a monthly pass on your federal income tax then who cares? Stop using gas taxes on health care and tax FATTY FOODS AND SUGAR FOR HEALTH CARE!!!

Seriously!??! What a crock! I did not get a pay raise of 12.5% retroactive to 2008 to account for this increase. If it wasn't for the increase in gas consumption, I would drive to work again effective Jan 1st. Where is the incentive to take public transit, if it is almost cheaper to drive!
