It's official: boards of education in BC can now set their own school calendars beginning with the 2013-14 school year.

Education Minister Don McRae says regulations have now been put in place to allow the change, which could mean an end to traditional summer holidays for some districts.

"Yeah maybe we could have opportunities where we have maybe three months of instruction followed by three or four weeks of holiday three time a year, that's an opportunity...maybe there's an opportunity for hours of instruction to start later in the day and end later in the day."

He says he's not aware if any districts have actually decided to make big changes to their calendar yet, and their must be public consultation before any change is made.
