Should the governance of Translink be changed?

While much of the Translink argument revolves around funding, the Mayor's Council also wants see governance changes.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson was asked if it is time for the region's transit system to be run by Metro Vancouver, and he says, "well, I think that governance is at the core of the challenges here.  The Mayors don't have the ability to make decision on the priorities we end up being asked to approve, at the end of the day, a budget and in this case it is not acceptable to keep asking property tax payers to chip in at this level."

When pressed if Metro Vancouver should run transit, Robertson would only say he is open to any system giving Mayors the authority and accountability to run Translink.

The Mayor's Council has given the Province until February 28th to "fish or cut bait" on funding transit.

Changed? Your damn right it should be changed! As evidenced by the last audit, the lack of control and accountability pertaining to spending, or, better yet over abundance of spending is a huge concern for the public. Trust is completely gone the entire office and its means and measures are laughable.

They must think people are made of money the way we are CONTINUALLY looked upon as a never ending source of funding. Its tax after tax and fee after fee and reaching a point of driver anarchy in the lower mainland...People are done paying....plain and simple were tapped out...There is no creativity on ways to create funding its ALWAYS tax payer funded....BE CREATIVE and get rid of the overpaid fat in the company as a starter.

Here's a novel concept....shut the borders, halt imigration for 5 years and lets get caught up to a point that we are not continually growing and unable to keep up with growth in terms of infrastructure....simply put if we continue to grow at the pace we are growing it will be a never ending battle of taxes and fees in order to try to stay afloat....cant you see we are FULL & completely unable to even sustain what we have today....

@taxed to death Are you even remotely aware that Canada, as a country, is highly UNDER-populated??? You want to pay less taxes? Then you need more people contributing to the tax pool. It's just common sense. Shutting off immigration will only increase the tax burden on the people already in the country.

Whenever you try to run a business by committee is it bound to fail. Anyway you cut it this is a business. Translink is in the business of moving people in the most efficient and financially viable way it can. When you have a CEO that is a committee and cannot agree on the time of day what do you expect. This issue with fare jumping is prime example how long does it go on before it is dealt with. The violence to the employees is simply not tolerated in any business. Get in a CEO who know the industry, get ideas from the staff and perhaps the stories we see in the news about Translink with be positive stores. Politicians could not organize a one person rush on a crapper or a party at a brewery.

Yes I want change of governance but not under the Mayors Council it should be disbanded, All British Columbians use this system one time or another, Translink should be under BC Trans and have Regional Deputy Ministers held accountable and signing only 1 year employment contracts and given the boot if they fail. Those that use the system the most are Bikers it is time for them to step up to the plate and pay their fair share, I do not want Mayors Council involved, Any proposal must be put to Vote by all users. Watts and her stupid idea of Watts (but even a stupid idea is better than none) is a no go for me, another dumb Liberal How about you?

@BOBF_5970 - Concerning your house on cement blocks.

How do you get to and from your house?
How do the goods you buy get to the locations you buy them from?
When Telus and Shaw come to your house how do they get to your house?
    What about Garbage collection?
    What about emergency vehicles?
When you have your Star Bucks, Timmies, or go to a restaraunt how do the employees get there, how do the goods get there?

Let's face it with out the roads we cannot live where we live. A tax at the house level is fine.

Perhaps we really need to focus on the real issue. Where is the money collected in the gas taxes going to? And if close to 100% of gas tax money collected in this area is not being spent on transportation in this area then why are we not raising bloody hell? The stupid People of this province rallied for Vanderzalm getting the stupid PST back, why can't they do it to get our taxes doing what they are supposed to instead of buying $12 glasses of orange juice?

@TrevorD_4 That is a good question Bob but Terry Lake and Christy Clark will not tell us, but I suspect it is going into Liberals pockets some where down the line. Clark and Lake both have to go.

...and if we elect another right wing government, they will continue cutting taxes for the rich and providing tax loopholes for the rich and increasing taxes on the rest of us. It's just what they do.
So, if you aren't part of the 1%, why vote in their best interests?
