RCMP have taken down a large marijuana grow operation in east Maple Ridge.

Mounties stumbled across the grow-op at a home on Ferguson Avenue on Monday while visiting the home on an unrelated matter.

They found  nearly one thousand plants in various stages of growth, along with several guns.

A 42 year old man and his 35 year old wife were arrested.

They've been released from custody and ordered to be back in court in February.

The Ministry of Children and Families have also been notified because the couple has two young children.

Grow-ops such as this one are the more often
    than not situation innrighborhoods, today.

They put residents, esp our children at great risk,
destory and depreciate proerty values for an
    entire neighborhood.

it is time government implement stiff penalties for
those caught setting up a grow op in residential areas.

It is a plaque on communities, tiing up valuable resources
    and tax $$.

More like...it's about time marijuana was regulated and decriminalized, so grow ops like these became a thing of the past. When was the last time you heard of someone growing tobacco or distilling alcohol, so they could sell it for a profit? It simply isn't worth the risk. It doesn't happen because almost everyone would choose the legal product, even at a much greater cost. Until the government removes the temptation of massive profits, from this kind of illegal activity, we'll keep seeing stories like this. I feel bad for these people because they risked their kids and lost, but more so for their kids, who have lost their parents through no fault of their own.
