A late-morning collision on the Malahat Highway has killed three people.

It happened around 11:30 in the Shawnigan Lake area -- between Victoria and Duncan.

BC Ambulance officials say it was a two-vehicle, head-on collision -- possibly between a car and a truck.

Five others were also sent to hospital.

Two of those patients are in critical condition, while the other three are stable.

They're all being treated at Victoria General Hospital.

The cause of the crash hasn't been determined -- however roads were slick, and weather conditions were poor.

I think we in North America are going to have to adopt the rules that the German people live by. Their tests for driving are extremely rigorous and there is no guarantee that a person from that country will actually receive a drivers license

Tragedies on the Sea to Sky hwy, Malahat and the road to Ft McMurray are common. It is usually driver error...so in this case a little slower taking into consideration the driving conditions may have prevented this terrible tragedy

The Malahat has many inclines, blind spots, and narrow lanes. It is heavily traveled by commuter traffic between Nanaimo and Victoria - so most drivers are very familiar with it. It is as bad as the old Whister highway, but there are not enough votes to justify the same expenditure as the Sea to Sky Highway.

Lots of talk to correct the danger, but after all is said and done, more is said than done. The tragedies don't appear to make a difference.

@HJDH How much of it is due to driver error do you think?

I know a man who drives to Fort mcMurray on a regular basis and he says people take chances passing people on blind spots etc....and they are really no further ahead.
