School officials: young suicide victim didn't fall through the cracks

Officials at the Maple Ridge school district want to assure parents they have several programs in place to prevent bullying, but they also need their help.

This, after a 15-year-old girl killed herself this week after repeated taunts and threats from her peers.

District spokeswoman Irena Pochop reiterates what we've heard from school officials: there were supports in place for Amanda Todd.

"This is not a child who slipped through the cracks. We did have significant school and community supports in place. But we do need more community involvement and more parent support."

Pochop lists some initiatives: a forum on cyberbullying, handing out the principal's and vice-principal's phone numbers so kids can report problems, and holding assemblies on how students must respect each other.

And they take immediate action on any bullying case that gets reported.

But she says they would really like to see more parent involvement to help build safety and respect.

While refusing to take questions on other matters, BC's premier is making herself available to comment on anti-bullying, one of her pet causes.

Christy Clark addressed the issue again during a live interview on CBC Newsworld this morning in Vancouver,  saying education is the key.

"If I ever get a chance or I ever get back into government, one of the things that I'm going to do is that I'm going to go out and I'm going to do whatever we can to combat bullying. So, we've just begun. We are beginning to educate 15-thousand educators around the province --give them that tool box. Next month, we'll have the online reporting tool up and it will be available to parents and to students. We are going to devote at least one professional development day for every teacher, every year, to dealing with bullying."

Clark says she hasn't spoken yet with Amanda Todd's family, but she's pleased the 15-year old girl's mother wants the video she posted last month to stay online.

In it, Amanda explains the torture she suffered from other teenagers... both online and in person.

Well if you say so Irena, it must be true.

When I went to school, teachers, other students and parent did NOTHING to stop the blatant bullying that went on every freaking day to alot of students.

I'm sure the same still holds true.

@michael_4092 Watch the movie documentary, Bully. Really shows how teachers, parents, administrators and the like treat bullying issues. It's quite sad and pathetic. I am sure there are some great districts and schools out there for those problems, but sometimes there is not.

I am sorry, but assemblies do not work. Tighten the rules and start giving the boot to the bullies. Remove the problems! Bullying is cancerous and it must be removed.

As a parent of a daughter, that ws bullied ALL through middle school and high school, let me tell you. Schools do NOTHING to help your kids. My daughter planned to end her life. She knew well enough to get help. Not from school. They turned their backs on her. Chages should be aloud on these people no matter how old they are..

@AnneS_4 Schools do something - They (THE TEACHERS/ADMIN/BOARDS) all make it worse and create and expand most of the issues!
They never want to LABEL Bullies or Bullying - because then they have to fill out paper work!!!!!! and actually maybe do something!
Schools are Bully Breeders! lead by the most powertripping bullies! Then like this freak in charge - irena - they take no responsibility and point fingers elsewhere and LIE about having anything in place for this kid - or ANY others!

Not sure who named this story. This fifteen year old girl did fall through the cracks. Is this more dirt mongering by media types or did the teachers really say this.

My goodness what a load of excuses! Of course this little girl fell through the cracks - Hey Irena Pochop she committed suicide! That is the ultimate of falling through the cracks

It is time to go after the people who cause these horrific events - and I think it is much more than bullying. I hear many stories of these poor kids commiting suicide but never a thing of punishing the people responsible

Someone once told me that the computer was the anti-christ. i am beginning to think this to be true

Oh my goodness. What a headline. If she didn't fall through the cracks where is she. Of course she fell through the cracks and the teachers and principal should be held accountable but of course we all know there is no accountability there.
This is a travesty. I think so many of the children we are raising today seem to have no compassion. This is very scary.

@RoseH_1028 I think it is unfair to blame the teachers and principal
for a situation, which began with the parties involved
and it started outside of school time.

Questions that need to be asked inc:

Did the parents of the young man, who posted her
photos on the internet know about this activity?

Did Amanda receive counselling thruout her various
      ordeals?

Did her parents try to help her, but, she did she
      shut them out?

One cannot put the blame entirely on the school system.

Were the Police called, when the photos were posted?

What about the young man, who phoned Amanda, when he had a girlfriend?

Did he mislead her into believing he cared for her?

Unbelievable! Let me tell you something TRUE! this poor girl stated in her last flash card THAT SHE HAD NO ONE!!!! This means no matter how much you tell everyone that there was support and guidance put in place by the school to help Amanda Todd it stands true that it was an obviously a failure.Amanda Todd did fall through the cracks because she had no one! Those are her words that is how she felt and so I suggest that you review your feeble attempt of helping this poor girl and admit you could have done more!.....

That this young woman is dead means she fell through the cracks. I am sure everyone concerned is sincere-but sincerity alone accomplishes nothing. It sounds great to have courses and assemblies and training, but without consequences to the perpetrators, nothing will change. There is a difference between being sincere, and being serious. In my opinion, the people in the system have confused the two.

The video describes a case where about 50 students swarmed this one girl. They either participated in or encouraged the abuse. You have to believe that plenty of good people are students at that school and that they know something about what took place. Yet, you can bet none of them will step forward and none of them took any steps to help her defend herself. The reason? The bullies have created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation-better to keep your head down or look the other way. The bullies function in an environment where they believe they can avoid any serious consequences for their actions, and so they operate without any real fear.

The "tool box" the premier describes is full of nice bromides and kind thoughts-aimed at bullies who are assumed to be just misguided people who need counseling and understanding. They need consequences that matter to them. It takes serious people willing to take the heat to implement such consequences. I have no confidence that there are many of them in the system.

@Jartann If Judge Bewley were still alive he would have responded in the way all of us think the system should.....punishment for the people who tortured this girl to death

The good Judge was drummed off the bench by fellow Judges-------He wasnt liberal enough for them - he practised common sense

I totally agree with you, when it comes t direct bullying, which
    happens at school.

School adminstrators need to take each complaint seriously
and work with parents, police, counsellors and the victims
and perpatrators and intercept before another death related
to bullying occurs within the school environment.

We, as adults must be there to guide young people, who do
not have the understanding of the real impact of bullying.

I'm sorry, it's a tragedy. Parents must take action against this, as we are seeing in that can result. My husband and I decided a month ago to install a free software called sass report, which we can see our daughter's activity on the Internet and social networks. Thus, we can detect and prevent any cyberbullying that our daughter may be suffering. where I found the link was http://www.sassreport.com
