BC's construction industry looks to Ireland for workers

The Province's construction industry is looking in an unlikely place for recruits to meet demand in Northern BC: The BC Construction Association is turning to Ireland to find thousands of skilled trades people.

Association Vice President Abigail Fulton says companies have tried to fill the spots with locals but there aren't enough with proper training and skills.

"We are happy to place Canadians first and we want to place British Columbians before we place anyone from overseas. This is filling positions that we haven't been able to fill."

Fulton says Ireland is a natural choice because training in that country is similar and with the Irish economy stagnant, workers are willing to move overseas.

And the federal government (Harper) said that a temporary foreign worker can be paid 15 % less than a Canadian workers

So- does this mean there is no one we are currently carrying on the welfare roll that can't fill these positions ? How about seasonal workers ? We should employ our own first

"companies have tried to fill the spots with locals but there aren't enough with proper training and skills." So hire people on as apprentices and train them.

So they are unable to find workers at any price? Funny how the labour market works one way in this province, when salaries are affected downward.

Those Irish workers will come in for a big surprise when they realize the cost of living in BC!

Interesting comments so far. It may seem hard to understand why we would need to look elsewhere for workers. But I have a feeling that many of these jobs are not your typical 'bang a hammer on a nail' construction jobs. Plus I've seen many ads posted for these 'Northern' jobs, but people from the 'south' are unwilling to go up there. So what else can these employers do? Also, apprenticeship is all well and fine. But on massive projects like these it may not be the best place to 'experiement' with inexperienced workers. As to the cost of living in B.C. it all depends, Vancouvers city yes is expensive. But various small towns in the other parts or B.C. are significantly cheaper to live, particularly when it comes to cost of housing.

From what I've been reading, they're throwing just about everything at this -- a lot more money for apprenticeships, tax incentives for employers, even money to push the trades as a feasible career move to high-schoolers. Sounds like this is more of a band-aid move, but my company's still short and we have a whole bunch of apprentices incoming... so I don't really blame 'em. We need experienced people too, and they're just not picking up what we're putting down.
