The BC Liberals say John Martin's defection from the Conservatives signals the beginning of the end for the right-wing split.

The announcement was done by Liberal campaign manager Mike MacDonald and even Deputy Premier Rich Coleman made the trip to Chilliwack.

MacDonald says the timing of the announcement, the day before the Conservatives' annual general meeting,  was no accident.

"It's a convergence of discussions that were happening here locally, but it also puts into sharp focus where things are going with the free enterprise side of things. And the Conservatives who are attending the convention this weekend have something to think about now about whether the path they're on is a path that's going to lead to anything constructive in B.C. politics."

MacDonald says Martin's defection is a decisive step towards uniting the right.

It wasn't long ago that the newest member of the BC Liberal Party was trashing the government.

Last December John Martin said the Liberals had not earned a fourth term.

Later he accused the Liberals of fear-mongering by warning of a vote split--the same vote split he's talking about today.

"The option of an NDP administration is a non-starter, that can't happen. So I was critical of the party, I was a political opponent of Laurie Throness and that was my job to attack the government and to attack its record, and I don't take back my performance in the byelection."

Martin has also said "the BC Rail scandal alone merits a trip to the penalty box" for the BC Liberals.

@joes_2868 hey! Man are you kidding me just look at the liberals record of big deficit and tax (HST) that you are still hoping to reinstate ! Look in the mirror and you can see why? When you cash your liberal check you can see why. Most of all you people are arrogant along with this self-centred arrogance and the fear mongering about the sky will fall if we elect the NDP. Do you think with the service fees and all the hidden taxes theses liberal friends of yours, helped the ordinary BC'er? food cost, heating cost, fuel cost,on and on and these are the facts Mr. Joe. You keep ragging about the past and the future,I am 64 i was hoping for some peace of mind when i reached my senior years! I have heard from you right winger's for over 50years that we can't leave this debt for our Children but as you point out that the free enterprise party has run BC for all of but 13 years then tell me again who was in charge of the debt and please no spin just facts big boy!

@joes_2868 Not one of these NDP supporters can tell you why the NDP should be elected. They carry on with their childish name calling which is getting really old. The NDP have been thrown out in every province with the last one to go next year. The last time the NDP were in power here the global economy was good and ours was in the tank.
We in BC are in fairly good shape compared to other provinces and other countries. The NDP will take us down. No doubt. Remember the big pay offs they gave the unions just before they were run out of office.
Socialism does not work. Never has and Never will.
It is really hard to find people face to face who will tell you they are NDP. They get brave when they have annonimity.
Margaret Thatcher once said "The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples money".

What happened never heard of this guy, he is not going to help Christy Clark, he was just looking for a job and pension from any party that would take him.

If I was a Liberal, I wouldn't be licking my lips over recruiting this Martin dud. He wants his ass in Victoria so bad, he'd grab a transit job. How could anyone in their right mind vote for some nit wit that can't figure out what he is? Next thing, after the election, he'll pop out of the garden and be a Greeney! Maybe he should start his own party. How's Whacko Western Wanderers sound? He'd get some air time, which appears to be all he wants. Rich Coleman is an absolute digrace, and it doesn't surprise me, he'd have his kisser in their like a dirty shirt. More B.C. Comedy. The way they all clamour for a government post after an election must have more going for it than we ALL realize!!!!!

He's a perfect Liberal; no principles, self centered, and deceitful.

@Garp No he's a perfect politician - Dixhead and the rest of the Never Dumber Party fit your description equally well. Remember what Cicero said - politicians aren't born , they are defecated !
