A scary incident for a bus driver on Sunday night.

New Westminster Police say they were called about  9:45 about the driver having allegedly been pepper sprayed by some passengers.

The bus was on 8th Avenue between McBride Boulevard and Coleborne Street.

Staff Sgt. Neil Collins says five people had gotten on the bus at an earlier stop.

"At some point during the trip, something happened between the bus driver and some of these passengers -- it was a verbal altercation and as the group of people left the bus, one of the group sprayed the bus driver with pepper spray, and the pepper spray actually ended up affecting the bus driver and two other adult passengers on the bus."

Collins says the injuries were very minor -- no one went to hospital.

The suspects fled -- police have not been able to track them down.

The protection of the drivers and other passengers overides peoples privacy while on any form of public transit. Buses and skytrains and stations should all be fitted with panic buttons and also cameras. Time to be able to use these pictures to hunt down and find these culprits.
