One of Premier Christy Clark's top ministers is calling it a day.

Kevin Falcon confirms he's quitting as Finance Minister and will not run in next year's election.

Falcon says he broke the news to the premier this morning.

"I think it is very important for the Premier to have a Minister of Finance who throughout the fall is putting together an agenda, spending and taxation plan, etc, they are prepared to fight for in an election campaign. And I don't think it is appropriate for me to assume that role and that position of making all of those decisions when I am not going to be running in the campaign and able to fight and defend the decisions that will be made in that".

Falcon was first elected in 2001.

He previously served as the Minister of Health and the Minister of Transportation.

FULL STATEMENT FROM KEVIN FALCON:

Today I advised the Premier that I will not be a candidate in the upcoming Provincial election. I also informed the Premier that I will be resigning as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance effective immediately. I will remain in my role as MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale.

I have made these decisions for both personal and practical reasons. On the personal level, I wish to spend more time with my wife Jessica and our 2 ½ year old daughter Josephine. Of equal importance, I am pleased to publicly disclose that Jessica and I are expecting another baby due in February 2013. Those familiar with the role of a Minister of Finance know that the lead up to a budget and its delivery in February, is a time of great stress and pressure. I am looking forward to participating in this exciting event, unburdened by the demands of the office.

After almost 12 years in public life, I wish to return to the private sector in a yet to be determined role. I feel enormously blessed and privileged to have served the constituents of Surrey-Cloverdale for almost 12 years. Inevitably there will be those who will question the timing of my decision or why I would not stay on as Minister until the election. Putting aside the timing associated with the newest addition to our family in February, I genuinely believe the Premier requires a Finance Minister who will prepare a budget and make taxation/spending measures that he or she will be prepared to defend in the upcoming election campaign.

I look back over my time as an MLA and Minister with great humility and pride. Humility, for being given the opportunity to serve as Minister of Deregulation, Transportation and Infrastructure, Health and Minister of Finance and Deputy Premier. Pride in working with colleagues to initiate and oversee some of the largest capital investments in BC history. Whether it’s the Port Mann bridge, Canada Line, Sea to Sky Highway, or working with my colleagues in Surrey to initiate the largest health investment in BC history (the $800m construction of a new Surrey Memorial Hospital and Jimmy Pattison Outpatient building), I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together. But I am equally proud of our health care innovations such as patient focused funding. In addition, having the Province’s Triple AAA credit rating re-affirmed, while many other jurisdictions are seeing credit downgrades, is a noteworthy achievement.

While hindsight allows us the opportunity to recognize what we could have done better, I take great satisfaction from seeing our province’s standing in the world today. During the last decade we’ve managed to make record investments in schools, hospitals, post-secondary institutions and our transportation network. All while reducing our debt to GDP ratio to amongst the world’s lowest. None of this would be possible without the support of my colleagues in often challenging circumstances.

I want to thank Premier Christy Clark for her support and dedication as leader of our party and Government.  Over the last 18 months, I have witnessed firsthand how well she can connect with individual British Columbians in communities across the Province. I also firmly believe that she is a great campaigner and communicator who will aggressively promote the Free Enterprise cause.

I also wish to acknowledge the leadership of former premier Gordon Campbell, who I had the privilege of working with for almost 10 years. We all know that BC politics is tough on premiers and most leave office followed by much criticism. This was certainly the case with former premiers WAC Bennett and Bill Bennett, though the passage of time allows for a better perspective. The Bennett’s are now viewed, appropriately, as visionary builders who guided British Columbia through challenging decades. Gordon Campbell repeatedly made difficult decisions to secure a better province for the next generation. I want to publicly thank him for providing his strong support and backing for numerous projects and causes I had the privilege of leading.

I also thank my fellow BC Liberal MLA’s for their contributions to public life. I have been honoured to serve alongside them and will continue to support their re-elections in whatever manner possible. I also thank members of the BC public service and my Ministerial office staff – past and present – that I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with. Their professionalism and performance allow British Columbia to be a leader in the country in a wide array of public policy initiatives.

Finally, I want to briefly reflect on 12 years of public life. I wish to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all those in public life, from all parties. The travel and time from away from family alone warrants appreciation. While it’s easy to succumb to doing what is expedient, over what is right – I will always admire those in public life who have the courage of their convictions. Even if you disagree with their policies, applaud (if only quietly) their courage for doing what they believe is right.

Again, thank you to my constituents, all members of the legislative assembly and members of the provincial media and the thousands of British Columbians I’ve had the privilege of working with to build a better province.

How ironic....Mr Anti-Taxation is jumping ship after contributing to some of the highest taxation and user fees this Province has ever seen.
And all you anti-NDP posters.....the NDP will have one heck of a mess to clean up from these self rightious, entitlement possessd hypocrits!

@KathieC_6864 [deleted] Just in case you didnt know the NDP left the big messes (do you call Bob Rae in Ontario - Ontario will never never be a 'player again'/

And barrett started it in Bc in the 70's - followed by Glen Clark in the 1990's

When the NDP is elected next year just watch the brain drain ------just take a look at Quebec and see BC.....

Lauding Campbell and Clark tells you all you need to know about this 'waste of space'! And he's thumbed his nose at all of us again by making no apology for his support of the HST....the absolute arrogance of this worthless piece of s---!
But there's another gold-plated pension we're going to have to shell out on!

    Rats from a ship.

Time to call the election Christy, now, before anymore of your "high profile" members call it quits.

Hilarious that there's no mention of the HST in his press release. Ironic.

I prefer an election sooner than later now. If the NDP are going to win, lets get it over with. The sooner they are in, the sooner they will be back out again and we can start recovering from the disaster they will cause. Dix has no platform, no experience running anything as big as a lemonade stand, is against economic growth and in favour of unlimited spending on civil servants and political friends. So, lets just get on with the 4 years of misery they will cause, knowing that we will probably be a have not province again, and maybe then people will learn their lesson. Socialists are clueless when it comes to economics and their ignorance always costs, and it always costs the least well of the most.

@Jartann I think you have drank too much of the free enterprise/Liberal Kool-aid......Once again....insults from the people who can't admit their type of public policy is a failure!

Overall Kevin Falcon has done a great job. NDP supporters have very short memories of the fiascos under the NDP gov't and the financial mess they left the province in. The NDP did do many things properly and the Liberals have also made manay mistakes, however, on balance, the Liberal record has been much better for the province than the NDP. Those thate suggest the NDP will do better are shortsighted and naive.

soon there will be none of the old campbell cabinet left. now christy can start building from a new field of candidates. younger minds with new ideas. please don't bring back the ndp. think hard about the future of OUR province for the next 5 years. let's keep this province a "have" province.if you won't vote for the return of the new liberals then vote for the conservatives. i don't want to work and live under another ndp mandate.

@BOBF_5970 Very sensible and common sense comment. Unfortunately Most people now do not think - they do what the media want them to do

@BOBF_5970 Almost agree with some of your points until you mention let crissy build a party. Crissy has proved she doesn't want to build a party she wants to have a party on our dollars. A new crop of brilliant doesn't change an old crop of greedy who is used to lying her way out of spots.(BC rail,HST,Bonus Pensions.)

Today is the Beginning of the End.

The Liberals may have made the upper class more upper crust, but they sure have screwed Johnny Lunchbucket.

HST, Carbon Tax, Union Bustin, taxes and on and on and on!! Plus there's a hole pile of stuff they did that really smells.

I kinda' feel sorry for Christy. She must feel like real crap right now.
Seems like a nice gal but she is no leader. Should have kept the radio gig.

Bet she's back on the box shortly!!

Mmm, with all these pro-NDP comments flooding the news sites, might be time to consider moving away from the province. Lived through Ontario under Bob Rae in the early 90's, not willing to live through another communistic government again.

Sometimes I wonder why people still flood to BC from China, Iran, and Korea.. BC is undeserving of their wealth, they're only remembered for their rudeness, expensive cars, buying up all the property etc,. I think it's time BC gets a taste of what the province would be like without the economic benefit of "the rich"

The politics of envy=the politics of hate. Take a close look at the entries from the left. Hate. Bitterness. Personal attacks. That is what envy produces.

I spent almost 40 years working in the free enterprise system, and in the process spent time in government offices. Government workers are almost without question the unhappiest and most bitter employees I saw. Why-they are told that they are "entitled" to more. People in the private sector are results oriented-government workers are process oriented who don't want to accomplish anything for fear of being "wrong". Free enterprise is not perfect by any means-bigger government is a guaranteed disaster 100% of the time.

My entry merely suggested the facts-which includes that BC became a have not province under the NDP, and that right now the finances of BC are, compared to other governments, in very good shape. Haters can't stand that, so the mean spirited, hate filled screeds replace sensible arguments.

I am no fan of the Liberals-they stand for nothing. The NDP stands for things that make me sick to the stomach-I grew up among them and know what they believe and it is not pretty. Which is why they were such a disaster in the 1990's and the 1970's

      @Jartann Right on!

After today(Thursday) it wouldn't surprise me if Christy Clark quits. I am dead serious. Too bad, she really cooked her goose when she quit the big """""En Dub""""" !
    1. commonsense posted on 08/30/2012 08:25 AM
@RegA [deleted] You must be dying of pain to be dead serious.

She is going down to the election. She calls it quits, then there is some MLA in the premier's seat. What does that mean? An election soon. She has 8-9 months remaining. She will tough it out. I am not a Christy fan, but she isn't going to just quit.
    2. commonsense posted on 09/06/2012 05:38 PM
@RegA [deleted] So....where's your so called fact of life statement about Clark resigning?

Yet another armchair expert proven wrong.

So now "the rich" are threatening to leave the province if their BC Liberal friends aren't allowed to milk the working class dry anymore. Good riddance, you greedy loser! Highest child poverty in Canada! Is that what the BC Liberals and "the rich" in BC stand for? Get out, and don't come back, you parasite!
    1. commonsense posted on 08/30/2012 08:29 AM
@Borninapirateship "The rich" are threatening to leave if the Liberals are not re-elected, they're doing so if we elect a socialist government. It's straight forward. Don't bite the hand that feeds. If a company decides to leave with an unstable type of government, that's okay. When a business is being taxed constantly, their employees are being encouraged to unionize and cost of living increases, they fight back by moving to a more business-friendly region.
  16. Borninapirateship posted on 08/30/2012 08:57 AM
Sorry about that. Greedy fearmongering always brings out the worst in me. The truth is, only "rich" fools would run from an NDP government in BC, because the resources and the money are still here. There will be no shortage of cash to be made. What I meant to say is, if you don't like paying your fair share, maybe you should move to China and make as much money as you want, by exploiting the poor. I hope you do, and the government decides to take it all from you and throws your sorry butt in prison for putting up a fuss. That's communism for you.
    1. miltw posted on 08/30/2012 10:38 AM
@Borninapirateship Why would they move to China to exploit the poor? Their are now more than enough poor right here in BC to exploit without needing to put air miles on the old government credit card..They can all stay here and make friends with the government and still not pay their fair share.
