CTF CAMPAIGNS TO REDUCE GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE WAGES
VANCOUVER/CKNW(980)

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation wants to bring public sector pay down to the levels that exist in the private sector.
BC director Jordan Bateman explains the campaign, which the CTF calls "Unfair Labour Day."

"This year we're launching what's called a campaign for a compensation equity act. Essentially what it is is an act that would make it illegal to pay public servants more than they could make for the same job in the private sector and to better take into account the deferred compensation that comes through pension plans through the public sector."

As part of the campaign, the CTF has released a video which compares service at private and government liquor stores, which concludes there is no difference except how much the clerks make.

How about raising the wages of all private sectors wages accross the board from the greater at Wal-Mart to a steel worker in the oil patch. I don't want anyone to take a paycut, I want to see everyone get a pay raise.

@YourAmericanMaster Yes, the great people of walmart! You mean greeter...

No, what's the best part of the private sector? You are paid what you are worth, and if you stuck it out, started the whole business or kissed ass, you got the higher wage. It's beautiful. You want a good wage, go and earn it; if not, go work for the government because your precious union ensures that you are paid more than you are worth.

Now, there are some great workers in government. Do not get me wrong here. There are people who simply choose to work hard, see a good future and good benefits to government work, and that is okay with me, but there are some who are clueless.

To be honest, gas jockeys, walmart greeters, cashiers (who solely stand there, sorry), or button monkeys for that matter...not talking about the pilots who were stereotyped as button monkeys...are paid what they are worth. Those who go above and beyond should be recognized. You are in a position and simply doing what you are told and just say hello, well you are worth the $10.25/hr you make. Enjoy it. You want more cash, then make it happen.

Oh my goodness, this moron would be in heaven if everyone made minimum wage and lived in a trailer park. Who does he think spends a lot of money in our society – the worker just scraping by with NO disposable income, or those making a living wage? What clerk making $10.25 an hour will ever buy real estate in our city? None, but a family of 2 making living wages might be able to get a mortgage. These private liquor store owners are simply lining their pockets with more and more money and could not care less about paying a decent living wage - Simply shameful. But you are right Jordon, let’s strip everyone of their living wages, and keep the poor down!

@Cat I don't understand, why is it the employers job to provide a living wage? If a person can't survive on what their job pays they need to find a new job or work 2 jobs. Why punish those who have taken the risk of starting a company when those are the people who should be rewarded.

Just how is he talking about the upper manage people like David Hahn ( BC ferries EX CEO ) that got a one million dollar a year salary or may be the upper management and executives at ICBC that are sharing a 12 million a year and the list goes on.. Or is he talking the blue collar worker that wasn’t had a raise in years??? The funny thing is all MLAs get an inflation raise ever year… but the blue collar worker well he/she doesn’t need a raise for years… I wonder just how much Bateman is getting for this anti-union pro BC Lying Liberal comment.

@TonyB_0924 Comparing Joe six-pack to David Hahn? That's just silly.

lots of pensions in the private sector are fantastic, don't quite like the umbrella approach they are taking here.

What an idiotic approach to end poverty in Canada. "Let's reduce everyone down to minimum wage and start over?" This campaign is not getting much support from the working class that drives this economy, especially in the fee plagued and overtaxed British Columbia environment. How can anyone afford living in Vancouver on minimum wage without the food bank and Value Village?

This Jordan Bateman fella, the director for B.C., how much does HE make per year? These people sound like a blue collar version of the Fraser Institute and we all know how idiotic they are at times.

There are far too many people living in la-la land, no wonder society is so screwed up.

Slashing anyone`s wage is pushing society into poverty, rather raise the wages that are stopping people from moving ahead. This guy is starting to sound like Crispy Clarke.
    1. commonsense posted on 08/30/2012 11:23 AM
@HedgeH You can slash or you can hold off on raising their pay. I would rather they start cutting redundant employees. That is where you will see the savings.

Of course, they need to do a true comparison. Provincial employees are paid more than federal employees. Our last wage increase was 1.5%...they want more than twice that. The average government employee does not get bonuses, paid Christmas lunches/dinners, free parking, discounts on products, tips, etc, etc. Working a second job has to be cleared by management first, to ensure there's not even a perception of conflict. And, of course, working side jobs under the table is practically impossible (and subject to discipline).
Am I complaining? No way....but I'm tired of all being painted with the same brush based on skewed info.

This Bateman character is as clueless now as he was when he sat on Langley council. So, as a Hydro employee I will see a wage increase, as our counterparts at FortisBC and in othr provinces are payed a much higher hourly rate than I am. And which companies shall we compare the CEO salaries? Fortress Group CEO = $15,000,000. Ivanhoe Mines CEO = $10,000,000. Goldcorp CEO = $10,000,000. BC Hydro CEO = 572,000.
