Bad Weather Causes Driving, Transit Chaos
METRO VANCOUVER AND FRASER VALLEY/CKNW(AM980)

1/4/2009

Heavy snow and freezing rain have made for treacherous driving throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, particularly in steep or hilly areas.

Police in Abbotsford have reported near-whiteout conditions.

Transit has also been hit hard, with buses re-routing throughout Metro Vancouver.

Articulated buses are being replaced with 40-foot standard buses in many areas and buses on the North Shore are stopping below the Upper Levels Highway.

Bus service to SFU and UBC has been suspended.

SkyTrain has all trains staffed by attendants under their snow plan, and managers are monitoring the situation for Monday morning.

Passengers are reminded to dress warmly, be prepared for long waits and be ready to walk if a bus or SkyTrain stops before its usual end-point.

Vancouver Police have closed many of the major hills in the city, including slopes on Boundary Road, Granville Street, Cambie Street and Main Street.

Police are asking drivers to stay off the roads and if you must go out, you should have chains or snow tires.
