TRAGEDY IN OKLAHOMA

The people of Moore, Oklahoma are still reeling from yesterday's devastating tornado, which blasted through the suburbs, killing at least 24 people. The National Weather Service says the twister was 800-metres wide, with 300-kilometre hour winds flattening homes and buildings in its path. Entire blocks of Moore appeared as though they had been razed, and cars were mangled beyond recognition. At least 120 people were injured. World Vision is loading trucks with supplies and preparing assessment teams to respond to the catastrophic tornado. What type of support does World Vision need to help the people of Moore?

ROMANITA HAIRSTON, VICE PRESIDENT, U.S PROGRAMS, WORLD VISION U.S

RED FACED CHAMBER

Our next guest describes the current senate scandal as “the darkest days of the 140-plus year history of the Senate”. It’s clear that the Senate’s reputation has bottomed out with the latest developments in the expense claims scandal – but what can PM Harper do to clear the controversy? Tim Powers says there are Senators who make immense contributions but those efforts are overshadowed by the actions and behaviour of a few… such as Senator Mike Duffy and his $90,000 gift from former chief of staff to the PM, Nigel Wright. Does the senate need to be reformed? NDP ethics critic Charlie Angus says this is damaging the Prime Minister’s brand. What would Tim Powers advise the PMO do to change the channel? This morning he told Conservative caucus that he didn’t get into politics to defend the senate – but what about his personal senate appointments?

TIM POWERS, CONSERVATIVE STRATEGIST AND VICE PRESIDENT, SUMMA STRATEGIES

CIVIC ISSUES ON THE PROVINICAL RADAR: FROM TRANSLINK FUNDING TO HOMELESSNESS

British Columbians re-elected a BC Liberal government and Christy Clark really is the “comeback kid”. Civic issues were not front and centre during the election campaign but now will issues such as homelessness funding and transit funding naturally crop up? Before the election campaign got underway, Christy Clark vowed to put the issue of transit funding to a referendum and since the BC Liberals got re-elected, it’s possible that Premier Clark will live up to her promise. Will the Mayors’ council try and talk her out of this? And will Mayor Gregor Robertson’s call for a subway from Commercial Drive to UBC put city council at odds with the Liberals?

THE IMPORTANCE OF SAVING BC’S DRUG WATCHDOG

The Therapeutics Initiative is a small watchdog agency at the University of B.C. It tracks new drugs after they’re introduced and reports on their effectiveness. The agency has discovered lethal side-effects in several highly touted pharmaceuticals, preventing an estimated 50 deaths in B.C. alone. By finding cheaper treatments that work just as well, it has also saved taxpayers tens of millions of dollars… but the BC Liberals have revoked funding for TI and this has left health researchers baffled by the defunding of the drug watchdog. Who benefits from the closure of TI – big pharma? Alan Cassels says TI is an invaluable alternative to information pushed by a drug industry that spends billions of dollars convincing healthcare workers to offer new mediations to patients. Also, since mid 2012 TI researchers have been locked out of a government network that tracks prescription drugs used in BC… the Health Ministry issued a media release stating it was suspending data sharing -- TI and drug researchers have been locked out of the database ever since. Is this a public safety issue? Dr. David Henry says BC is the only major province not supplying data to drug researchers and watchdogs. Why is the government cutting off funding and access for TI?

DR. DAVID HENRY, PRESIDENT AND CEO, INSTITUTE FOR CLINICAL EVALUATIVE SCIENCES

ALAN CASSELS, DRUG POLICY RESEARCHER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA

DR. COLIN DORMUTH, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY, PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTICS, UBC AND CHAIR, THERAPEUTICS INITIATIVE’S PHARMACOEPIDEMIOLOGY GROUP

WOULD BIKING TO WORK… WORK FOR YOU?

Cycling advocates say biking to work is good for your health, the city and your wallet – there’s no denying the benefits but what about the drawbacks? Could you bike to work on a regular basis? Where would you lock up your bike? Do you have showers at your work or would you just bring a change of clothes and extra deodorant? As commuters continue to feel the pinch at the pumps, the regional non-profit, HUB: Your Cycling Connection is trying to motivate people to ditch their cars and ride their bikes during this year’s Bike to Work Week, May 27th-June 2nd. How many people will likely participate? Calling all listeners: would biking to work on a regular basis work for you?

PROS AND CONS OF PIPELINE EXPANSION IN BC

If BC doesn't build more pipelines, what's the economic alternative? These are some of the questions that will be explored at the first "Credible Conversations forum". British Columbians from various backgrounds have come together to form the group CRED -- Conversations For Responsible Economic Development. What is responsible economic development? The group has serious concerns about the Kinder Morgan expansion project and they want to do research, bring forward data and share information with BC'ers so they can make decisions based on fact and not rhetoric. What are the pros and cons of pipeline development in BC? Can we afford to turn the opportunities down?

BRADLEY SHENDE, FOUNDER OF THE DIGITAL AGENCY "M20" AND ADVISOR, CRED

LIZ MCDOWELL, ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANT AND FOUNDER, OTESHA PROJECT UK AND THE YOUTH FUNDING NETWORK AND ADVISOR, CRED

BC HAS THE MOST FEMALE LEGISLATORS IN CANADA!

The results of BC’s provincial election are in…and women have come out on top. At least 29 women will be heading to Victoria to be representatives in the legislature; the highest number of women in the chamber’s history. With the newly elected female MLAs, BC’s elected chamber is the only one in Canada where women hold more than one-third of the seats. But are we still a long way from gender equality in politics? Is politics too negative for many women? What are the biggest issues that make many women think twice before getting involved in politics?

LAST BC CHEF STANDING IN TOP CHEF CANADA!!

Matthew Stowe is the only BC chef remaining in the Top Chef Canada competition! Cactus Club has been holding viewing parties at various locations each week and last night the party was at the South Surrey location. Is there more hype over Top Chef Canada in BC because of how well local chef Matthew Stowe is doing? What advice would he give chefs just starting out? What’s his secret to keeping calm under pressure in the kitchen?

MATTHEW STOWE, TOP CHEF CANADA COMPETITOR AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CHEF, CACTUS CLUB CAFÉ
