A family is furious with Fraser Health following the death of their matriarch.
73-year-old grandmother Sarjit Kaur was in the emergency room at Royal Columbian Hospital waiting for a treatment bed when she passed away two weeks ago.
Kaur’s niece Amarjit Minhas tells Global News her aunt’s death was undignified.
“Six hours in a wheelchair. And then only to be found dead when they found a bed for her, when there’s nothing to be done. She could’ve died with her family around her and all the rituals that we do before somebody dies. She could’ve died like that if she had been taken care of.”
In a statement to Global News, Fraser Health says it’s reviewed the patient’s chart and shared all of the information related to her care with the family.
Kaur was diagnosed with a bladder infection a week before her death and a doctor found no change in her health after taking antibiotics.
“My cousin called me around 7 o’clock to say, ‘Hey. We’ve been here for six hours. She’s still sitting in a wheelchair. Nobody has come to look at her or tell us what the test results were or anything.”
Minhas, who is a registered nurse, says her aunt should’ve been checked on at least every two hours and been provided with an IV.
