Surrey’s Director of Public Safety Terry Waterhouse says the new combined policing and bylaw unit working Surrey’s so-called Whalley strip has connected at least 80 homeless and addicted with services and housing.
He says the progress made by the team in only a few months is significant.
“Individuals in that area have had a lot of challenges and hard times and so they’re sometimes resistant to services.”
Waterhouse says it’s also encouraging to see those living on the strip open to help.
“What we’re really noticing is now that our team is out there they are much more amenable to solutions.”
Waterhouse says long-term stable housing is what’s most needed.
