Spring may be here, but it’s still winter on local mountains.
North Shore Rescue team leader Mike Danks says spring tends to be a busy month for crews, where hikers have the misconception that spring means day trips in light jackets and shorts.
“Do a bit of research on the hike you’re doing, and make sure you have some extra clothing with you. The big thing we’ve been having lately is people going into areas where there’s no cell phone coverage and make sure you have a fully charged cell phone and if you’re going somewhere where there’s no coverage, we highly recommend a satellite device as well.”
Danks says there’s still a lot of snow on the North Shore mountains, and there’s no specific date when it becomes safe to start hiking in summer attire.
He says spring is the season when rescue crews see the amount of calls ramp up.
