If you’re wondering why the HOV lanes on the Port Mann Bridge have been off-limits at different times this week, it’s because crews are reloading the bridge’s de-icing cables.
Greg Johnston with TI Corp says it has nothing to do with snow build-up, but it’s a safety precaution.
“Crews need that space, they are hanging above traffic and it’s a WorkSafe requirement and it’s also common sense, we don’t want out crews hanging over live traffic,” he says.
“In the morning rush hour, you shouldn’t see an HOV lane closure westbound across the bridge, and in the afternoon we try to make sure that the eastbound HOV lane is open for the afternoon rush hour.”
Johnston initially said the work would continue until the end of the week, but later revised that estimate to the end of today.
