WATCH: Bystander video shows the taxi completely engulfed in flames
“He was just totally hyped at the drugs… all the sweat was coming off his face, and he was having blood like, on the cheeks.”
That’s how Baldeep Singh describes the man he picked up outside of a concert at BC Place last night, just after 7 p.m.
He says the man claimed he needed him to speed and run red lights because his wife was pregnant.
When he refused, he says the man became increasingly aggressive, eventually climbing into the front seat before grabbing him and pushing him out of the still moving van.
“He came in front, he just came totally on the aggressiveness, like threatening me and showing the eyes, and he held my hand here so I should not be able to take the keys out. The Van was near about 5 kilometres per hour speed.”
Vancouver Police say investigators are still determining if drugs or alcohol played a part in the dramatic carjacking, which ended with Singh’s taxi in flames.
A 34-year-old Burnaby man is now in custody.
Police say after getting control of the vehicle, the suspect then smashed into another car at the intersection of Clark Drive and Venebles Street, bursting into flames.
Staff Sergeant Randy Fincham says the suspect then attempted to hijack another car but a good Samaritan intervened and held the suspect down until police arrived.
“Fortunately this man was able to jump in and remove the suspect from the driver’s seat of the car, which was still occupied by a woman, and hold onto him until police arrived. Fairly dramatic, when police showed up, that taxi was engulfed in flames.”
Fincham says no major injuries to the cab driver or others involved in the incident.
“At this point we are still looking into his background, motive still remains a fairly significant part of this. I’d have to look into it further as far as his prior involvement to police.”
The suspect is facing robbery charges.
