Vancouver Police and Vancouver Fire are investigating a string of suspicious overnight fires in East Vancouver.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief John Dennis says crews responded to three fires around 1am within a few block radius of Inverness Street and East 29th Avenue.
Crews were first called to a homes after residents woke up to the crackling sound of fire at the back of their home.
“There was significant damage to the outside of the house and displaced a family of four.”
The family escaped the flames through a window.
“Shocked, totally shocked,” resident Teresa Calalang told Global News. “I’ve been here for seven years. We didn’t expect this, it’s terrible.”
Calalang told Global it was lucky her husband came home early from work and were able to help them get out quickly.
Shortly after that crews were called to McBride Elementary School — someone piled items against a wall and set them on fire. And the third fire happened at another home — someone set fire outside a garage.
“The garage fire and at the school were knocked down pretty quickly.”
Dennis says there were no injuries.
