Burnaby-Seymour MP Terry Beech has been promoted to Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Coast Guard.
The rookie MP’s Burnaby riding is home to the Trans Mountain Pipeline’s terminus, where it is opposed by a majority of constituents.
Beech has been in an uncomfortable position since the pipeline’s approval after he pledged during the 2015 election campaign that a Liberal government would change the pipeline review process.
That didn’t happen for the Kinder Morgan project.
The Liberals instead appointed a three-member ministerial panel which heard residents’ concerns but made no recommendations to Cabinet.
During that process, Beech also made a presentation to the panel in which he presented an 18-page report detailing community concerns.
Last month, Beech held an open house to speak with constituents about the pipeline and issued a lengthy video statement in which he detailed his advocacy on the issue, and outlined ways the project approval process had taken them to heart.
