The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service is confirming a youth has died in a fire in East Vancouver.
Crews were called to the two-alarm fire near East 15th ave and Nootka street around 3 p.m. this afternoon.
As crews attended, people could only look on in shock.
One neighbour says it’s a close-knit community that has rarely ever seen a tragedy like this one.
Neighbour Christine Duong says she was the one who called 9-1-1.
“I saw smoke coming out of the house, I ran out, saw the people out there crying, asked if they called 9-1-1, they hand’t so I called, and the last thing I heard was the little girl inside screaming.”
Captain Jonathan Gormick says five other people were taken to hospital for burns and smoke inhalation.
He says the fire was put out quickly, and its cause is now under investigation.
“Unfortunately the house was home to six family members so five had been transported to hospital and there is a single deceased family member that remains inside. We are working with fire investigators and VPD arson unit at this time for cause determination but it will be a few hours before we even have an idea.”
Firefighters say icy roads were not a factor in their response time, with the first engine on scene under target time.
