Volunteers are hoping to make it a merry Christmas for crew stranded aboard a freighter in the Georgia Straight — with a second batch of care packages.
Maritime labour groups have already gifted the crew a Christmas tree and a pig to barbeque.
Speaking on the Steele and Drex Show, Steve Hnatko with Tymac Transport says they’ve collected one thousand more gifts to bring the 16-member Filipino and South Korean Crew.
“They were donating everything from money to clothes and food. One of the associations in Victoria, the Filipino association of Victoria were baking tons of goods and desserts for these crew members. One of their requests was KFC, so a members went out and brought KFC to the ship,” he says.
The crew of the “Hanjin Scarlet” have been stranded on the B-C coast since August — when bankruptcy problems hobbled the ship’s owners.
“Donations are always welcome. The mission does work like this all year round, especially to all of the seafarers and visitors that come to Vancouver,” Hnatko says.
